Robin Hood rides again!

The latest book in the Paratime series created by H. Beam Piper and lovingly carried on by John F Carr and friends is the Hos Blethan Affair.

Taking place before the onslaught of Styphon's Grand Host into Hos Hostigos, the story involves a Lord Kalvan idea to pull forces out of said Host by creating havoc in other kingdoms. Sending a team into the southernmost Great Kingdom of Hos Bletha, Kalvin's men recreate the legend of Robin Hood and use that to build forces to overthrow to try and overthrow the despotic king there.

The new team of Carr/Diehr work well and the depth of the book shows it. Tactics, weapons, the character development are alive, new folks are added and old ones see changes that only makes them better. As is usual for this series, one sees good people even on the "bad side" caught by duty and honor to fight for a cause that is less than stellar. This episode was alluded to in earlier Kalvan of Otherwhen books and now we see it fleshed out.

My chief complaint is the one of terrain/distance. Florida is not a place where one can move fast or w/heavy wagons in a period of unimproved roads/trails. As in the other Kalvan books, forces move too fast for reality. Also I seriously doubt that the water table would allow serious dry moat/cellar creation.

But those are minor. Mr Carr had some health issues and got the book out later than promised but the wait was worth it. Reading the other books is not necessary (tho helpful at times) as this one can stand alone quite well.

Congrats on this continuation of a grand series and the creation of a good writing team. It keeps the interest high and stokes the hope for the next one to hurry up!

Not a smart move to try to shove a book into the already existing timeline. Buyer, prepare yourself.

While the continuation of the Kalvan series, first by Carr and Green, then Carr alone has been a very pleasurable experience, here with Diehr, there is some backtracking and because of that a good deal of confusion with the writing on occasion. Perhaps because Diehr has added his input into the series.

We jump back a few books from where Carr had last left off and rewrite history because of it. And then without much aid Kalvan sends his team out to do something that is poorly defined hoping for the best. We then see several solutions put into motion. The plots of Robin Hood stolen, Guerrilla Warfare, and the hidden prince pollen, though the ending repercussions clearly change events that we already have read in the three previous books. Heroes here are now stuck in Hos-Bletha when before we knew them to be elsewhere in Kalvan's world, aiding him directly to fight Styphon, especially once Kalvan starts losing and retreats from the East to the middle.

That costs Mr Carr a star in my estimation, and despite several copyeditors a few typos and naming conventions that should have been caught, some on the same page, (A Baron is then made a Count, and then a Duke, and then back to a Baron all within the same page)

This might have worked, but someone didn't think overall how best to do this. Skranga a beloved character who is in charge, ends up twiddling his thumbs for months doing nothing. Skranga if one follows this from the first would never have nothing to do. As do some of the other characters that Carr and Diehr have brought on stage. Sometimes our characters are holding onto the tigers tale but that tiger is dragging them all over the South. Then time scale is another thing not well thought out when our heroes have built a town and planted fields that will be fruitful far too swiftly in the worst time to farm.

The story is a fun read, but Carr crammed the square peg in a round hole and did not think it through far too many times in this tale. One that is not finished in the books that he already had written that cause the calendar to advance by a few years. So what really happens to Hos-Bletha and it's own civil war now in those three books? Do we get 2nd editions of them as well? That I think is something readers of the series need to be aware of, and that Carr needs to address as well.

A fleshed-out side plot in the overall "Lord Kalvan sequels" story arc

This installment in John F. Carr's series of "Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen" sequels covers a side plot to the main story arc following Kalvan and his followers in Hos-Hostigos & Hos-Harphax (later Nos-Hostigos, the Middle Kingdoms, and parts of the northern Great Kingdoms). Kalvan's chief spymaster, Duke Skranga, together with a maverick Hos-Hostigi officer best suited to independent commands, are sent down to Hos-Bletha to cause as much mischief as they can down there, with the aim of preventing Hos-Bletha from contributing any troops to the Grand Host the Styphoni are expected to send against Hos-Hostigos eventually. This book's plot overlaps the events of Kalvan Kingmaker and Siege of Tarr-Hostigos (or is it Fall of Tarr-Hostigos? I've read both the novella and full-novel-size versions of this, and I tend to get their titles mixed up), with the insurrectionists in Hos-Bletha out of contact with Hos-Hostigos -- so this book has a fairly successful conclusion (but with the looming disaster coming to Hos-Hostigos lurking just offstage, for those who have read those other books).
I enjoyed this installment of the "Lord Kalvan sequels" series, although what I would really like to see would be a sequel (or 2 at the most) which would bring the overall plotline to a (hopefully) triumphant conclusion, with the "good guys" winning, the exiled Hostigi at least having the option to return to the old Hos-Hostigos and rebuild, and all of the side plots in various parts of the Great Kingdoms & Middle Kingdoms both communicating with the main plot and winding up themselves. The copy-editing seems somewhat improved in this volume from that in previous "Lord Kalvan" sequels (although I still think Mr. Carr could still use the services of a proper copy editor for all of these books, just to clean up the grammar & punctuation). An exciting treat for fans of this series!

Culture 101 for technical professionals

Some books break new ground by introducing fresh concepts, others by applying well proven concepts to fresh contexts and audiences in down-to-earth and creative ways. Managing Cultural Diversity in Technical Professions is of the latter kind-it is Culture 101 for those who have followed the technical curriculum.
Culture, as Laroche points out, tends to be far from the minds of technical experts, engineers and scientific researchers. It does not show up in the data and procedures they work with. It does show up, however, in the disappointment, confusion, and even rancour that too often occur in these circles as those of different ilk attempt to cooperate with each other. These unpleasant aspects of collaboration are usually dismissed as personality deficiency or incompetence on the part of one party or both, usually in gritty language about, "loose cannons," "ruffled feathers," and "passing the buck." (The author even provides a glossary of such terms commonly occurring in North America). Their cost to progress and profit is rarely counted.
Wisely, the author, who has his feet firmly planted in both technical and educational worlds, enables the reader to identify cultural dimensions in the behaviors they commonly produce or experience in others by telling stories that readers can immediately recognize. To these he applies the boilerplate of cultural theory, building upon Geert Hofstede's cultural dimensions and the insights of others who have applied and expanded this seminal work. Power distance, individualism, risk aversion all come to life in the daily encounters that affect productivity, synergy and career advancement.
Understanding a cultural difference or conflict still does not resolve it. Managing Cultural Diversity in Technical Professions does not leave us in theoretical speculation but repeatedly asks and answers the questions, "What can you do?" with very practical advice and tips, and, "What can you gain?" with a clear expectations of how ones management skills, interpersonal competence, and career path can benefit from expanding one's intercultural response repertoire.
The result is both a very readable and well documented text, addressing the common misunderstandings and frictions between what Laroche carefully defines as Americans and New Americans when it comes to management, teamwork, decision-making, feedback, making presentations, humor, and a host of other human interactions that technical people are involved in. Essentially written for the North American workplace in language, style, and presentation, the book can nonetheless find a place in global management curricula and training efforts. Certainly, it belongs in the hands of any intercultural trainer who has been interrupted with the question, "Can you give me a concrete example of that?" when presenting a point of cultural theory to a hard-nosed technical audience.

Getting Multicultural Teams to Work!

We all know how much difference there is when a team functions well - the tricky part is getting it to happen. This new book tackles this topic in the context of Canadian engineering teams, which are almost all composed of people from many cultures. In this insightful book, Dr. Laroche includes lots of material to help get multicultural teams firing on all cylinders.
Written for both managers and technical contributors, the book uses a multicultural lens to look at management styles, teamwork, communication and career management. This new perspective drives home a central theme that cultural differences are key in how our teams work, and not widely recognized in their importance. In these kinds of abstract topics I find concrete examples very helpful, and the author includes numerous anecdotes drawn from his consulting background. These vivid examples show the profound impact of what sometimes seem like small issues, like the Mexican engineer who resigned the day after getting some negative feedback in front of his colleagues.
The book also includes a number of quantitative charts and tables showing how different cultures have quite different expectations of the importance of hierarchy, individualism, and risk tolerance. Having read this book, I now much better understand the experience I had in Canada managing an employee from another culture. What I experienced as a lack of assertiveness was actually the case of an employee expecting highly directive management, and their way of showing respect. Had I understood that well at the time, I would have approached the situation quite differently, even starting at the interview stage. On the flip side, the book would have helped me a lot during my two-year stay in France. In particular, it wasn't until I read this book that I realized that when my French colleagues were jumping in and finishing my sentences, they were demonstrating their agreement by showing they knew how my sentences were going to end!
The book closes with a number of interesting comparisons, like the different emphasis on theory and hands-on work that exist between engineering schools in Canada, the United States, France and Mexico. And to finish off, an entertaining appendix containing explanations of expressions which we take for granted from such diverse areas as baseball ("to be out in left field" - to make no sense at all) and warfare ("loose cannons" - ones which are not fixed down, and fire a different direction each time).

The book on analysis and special functions

The older I get, the more I realise the truth of what my expert colleagues told me a long time ago: there is ONE book on analysis, and it's called Whittaker and Watson. Shame on CUP for reprinting it in less than perfectly top quality. I guess they know that people will always buy it. It is a book that starts from the very basics of real and complex analysis, and moves on to the very depths of classical special functions. It's a joy to read and to teach from. No respectable mathematical physicist can afford not to own a copy. And it's about 1/4 the price of a typical, low level, textbook.

The DEFINITIVE text for classical Analysis
This book is the definitive text in classical Mathematical Analysis. It was first published in 1902 and the fact that it is still in print is testimony to it's wide ranging utility and appeal.
It should be noted that this text is not for those who are new to the rigour of Analysis; its presentation is suitable for a final year undergraduate or for the post-graduate student. More importantly, its wide ranging content of proofs and results would also prove useful to the Physicist.
The first part of the book covers the "essentials" of analysis: continuity, differentiability, summation of series, convergence and uniform convergence, and the theory of the Riemann integral. Subsequent chapters quickly but comprehensively develop the theory of analytic functions, the theorems of Cauchy, Laurent, and Liouville and the calculus of residues. These chapters knit very well into the earlier presentation of the basic processes of analysis! The pleasing thing is that despite the passage of time and the advent of hundreds of books on Complex Variable Theory, Whittaker and Watson's treatment still bears a mark of freshness and rigour.
Also included is a comprehensive treatment of expanding functions in infinite series and asymptotic expansions and summability of series. For completeness, the text also covers the theory of linear differential equations and Fourier series.
The second part of the book is what stands it apart from the rest. The authors provide a comprehensive discussion of the major transcendental functions: Gamma, Zeta, Hypergeometric, Legendre, and Bessel to name the more commonly encountered ones. The treatment is rigorous but the copious number of examples provides opportunity to learn the theory and apply it. Lots of apparently obscure results, many that would be useful in Physics applications, are cited as examples.
The latter chapters presents a treatment of Elliptic, Theta and Mathieu functions.
Overall, Whittaker and Watson will continue to be the guiding light for any serious scholar of classical analysis and an excellent reference point for the solutions to the fundamental equations of Mathematical Physics. Even though I am not a practising Mathematician, I find this a pleasant book to dip into: there's always a little surprise and something new to learn.

A true classic of classics indeed...

I decided to purchase this title about three months ago after hearing lots of praise about it on the internet and wanting to learn the subject, and I can now see that this praise was not exaggerated. A hundred years after its first publication, this classic still remains the definitive general reference in the field of special functions and is a very solid textbook in its own right.
The book is split into two main parts: the first consists of short (but detailed) overviews of the various sub-disciplines of analysis from which results are required to develop later results, and the second part is devoted to developing the theories of the various kinds of special functions. The sheer breadth of topics and material that this book covers is utterly incredible. The major topics covered in the first part of the book are convergence theorems, integration-related theories, series expansions of functions and differential/integral equation theories, each of which are split into two or three chapters. The reader is assumed to be familiar with some of the subjects here and these chapters are intended more as a review, but they are still quite self-contained and will also appeal to those who have not encountered the subjects yet. (I am only 16 and know no more than ODEs and a little real analysis, but I learned some material from this)
The second section, which is really the heart of the book, starts off with a detailed treatment of the fundamental gamma and related functions, followed by a chapter on the famous zeta function and its unusual properties. The book then covers the hypergeometric functions - the focus is on the 1F1 and 2F1 types, being ODE solutions - which are perhaps the cornerstone of this field, followed the special cases of Bessel and Legendre functions. There are a number of ways of developing and teaching the ideas regarding these functions; this book mainly uses the differential equation approach, starting by defining these functions as solutions to ODEs and going from there. There is also a chapter on physics applications (using these functions to solve physics equations), which is sure to please the more applied math readers. The next three chapters are devoted to elliptic functions, covering the theta, Jacobi and Weierstrass types. (one chapter on each) The two remaining chapters are on Mathieu functions and ellipsoidal harmonic functions. Along the way, some additional functions are also sometimes mentioned in the problem sets. (barnes G, appell, and a few others) About the only room for improvement here would be some analyses of named integrals (EI, fresnel, etc.) and inverse functions (lambert W log, inverse elliptics, etc.), and perhaps more on multivariable hypergeometrics, but these things are not a big deal considering how much else appears in here, and I have not really seen any book out there that covers these anyway.
Each chapter has several subsections, usually one on each major theorem or property of the function in question, and these consist of the main discussion and proof, a few corollaries, and a couple of exercises that illustrate the usage of the theorem. At the end of the chapter, some more sets of problems are given; these mostly consist of proving identities and formulas involving the functions, so answers are not needed, but it would be nice if there was a showed-work solutions book available for students. The problems themselves are very well designed and some really require the use of novel methods of proof to obtain the result. The language is a bit in the older style with some unconventional spelling and usage, but it does not detract from the subject material at all (actually, I personally liked this form of writing), and the price is about right.
The only real complaint I have with this book has nothing to do with its content; it is the printing quality. The text font is simply too small in a number of places and also sometimes looks "washed out;" while it is still readable, such a classic gem as this definitely deserves a better effort on the publisher's part. (one of CUP's other works on the same subject, Special Functions by Andrews et al, has much better printing, although is not as good as this in other respects)
For those interested in the field of special functions and looking for something to start off with, A Course of Modern Analysis would be, hands down, my first recommendation. You cannot really do much better than this.

I will not say too much. I think it will be enough to quote from Ayn Rand's "The Voice of Reason; Essays in Objectivist Thought". The book written and the class taught by Glen Rodgers is "perceptual level history, history as nothing but a torrent of unrelated, disintegrated concretes."
