I, Rigoberta Menchu: An Indian Woman in Guatemala, by Rigoberta Menchu

Now a global bestseller, the remarkable life of Rigoberta Mench, a Guatemalan peasant woman, reflects on the experiences common to many Indian communities in Latin America. Mench suffered gross injustice and hardship in her early life: her brother, father and mother were murdered by the Guatemalan military. She learned Spanish and turned to catechistic work as an expression of political revolt as well as religious commitment. Mench vividly conveys the traditional beliefs of her community and her personal response to feminist and socialist ideas. Above all, these pages are illuminated by the enduring courage and passionate sense of justice of an extraordinary woman.

A "biomythography" that deserves attention
By Michael J. Mazza
"I, Rigoberta Menchu" is one of those books which seems to be overshadowed by controversy. A Quiche Mayan woman of Guatemala, Rigoberta Menchu told her story orally to anthropologist Elisabeth Burgos-Debray in Paris in 1982. Burgos-Debray transcribed the story and published in Spanish in 1983; Ann Wright's English translation appeared in 1984. The book, which both gave a voice to the Native American culture of Guatemala and exposed the brutality of Guatemala's civil war, became an international sensation. Menchu received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992.
Anthropologist David Stoll later uncovered evidence of inconsistencies within Menchu's story. Conservative cultural activists interpreted Stoll's research as discrediting Menchu's story. For example, David Horowitz blasted Menchu as a "liar" and further condemned "I, Rigoberta Menchu" as "one of the greatest hoaxes of the 20th century." Many derided such attacks on Rigoberta as politically motivated and intellectually dishonest.
I think that "I, Rigoberta Menchu" has, perhaps, been misunderstood and misused by people on both sides of the left/right political divide. And so, for that matter, has the work of David Stoll. While he is sharply critical of the book in his own work, "Rigoberta Menchu and the Story of All Poor Guatemalans," Stoll also corroborates parts of her story. In fact, at the end of his own book Stoll praises "I, Rigoberta Menchu" as a Guatemalan "national epic" (p. 283).
Because of all of the accusations and counter-accusations being thrown around by people with conflicting political and intellectual agendas, it is daunting to even approach "I, Rigoberta Menchu." Nevertheless, I agree with David Stoll that this book is an authentic national epic of Guatemala; I also believe that it is a book which deserves to be read.
I look at "I, Rigoberta Menchu" as a "biomythography." African-American author Audre Lorde used this term to describe her own autobiographical narrative, "Zami: A New Spelling of My Name." Think of a biomythography as a life story that combines fact with fictionalized, borrowed, or adapted materials in an attempt to arrive at greater truths. I don't mean to suggest that Menchu, or anyone, for that matter, should be excused for misrepresenting facts. But it seems to me that "I, Rigoberta Menchu" gives the reader clues that it is a "biomythography" from the first page of the first chapter: Rigoberta says of her story "I didn't learn it alone," and further stresses that "it's not only my life, it's also the testimony of my people."
And if you approach the book carefully, you will discover a powerful and fascinating text. It is impossible in the space of a short review to cover all of the highlights of "I, Rigoberta Menchu." But a few include her description of the interactions among the diverse ethnic groups of Guatemala, her account of Quiche Mayan religious beliefs and practices, and her descriptions of such everyday activities as making tortillas. Particularly fascinating is her account of how Guatemalan revolutionaries interpreted parts of the Bible in order to aid their struggle; at the end of Chapter XVII she describes the Bible as the "main weapon" of her comrades.
Yes, Rigoberta has a political agenda. But so did Frederick Douglass and Malcolm X; this does not diminish the value of their autobiographies as both literary texts and historical documents. My advice is to read both "I, Rigoberta Menchu" and David Stoll's biography of Menchu. Read commentaries on the controversy from all parts of the political spectrum. And read other texts about the violence in Guatemala and in other countries rocked by political strife and ethnic tension. And finally, draw your own conclusions about the book.

This book is NOT an autobiography
By Kurt
Many of those who criticize Ms. Menchu's work subscribe to the fallacy that "I, Rigoberta Menchu" is an autobiography. After David Stoll published "Rigoberta Menchu and the Story of All Poor Guatemalans," Ms. Menchu responded, "'Yo, Rigoberta Menchu' no fue una autobiografia, sino un testimonio." ("'I, Rigoberta Menchu was not an autobiography, but rather a testimony.") Marc Zimmerman, an expert on Guatemalan resistance literature, has stated that testimonial literature implicitly contains the possibility of "other voices." In essence, Ms. Menchu aimed to speak for her community rather than herself. The idea of the collective voice is a well-known characteristic of Mayan culture. There is also a level of common sense that eludes many of Ms. Menchu's critics. Assuming that the book is an autobiography, does it really matter that one of Ms. Menchu's brothers was actually shot by the army instead of burnt alive. This hairsplitting does not conceal the fact that the Guatemalan military committed such atrocities in the death of over 200,000 Guatemalans and the destruction of over 400 villages. "I, Rigoberta Menchu" played a pivotal role in bringing international attention to the plight of Guatemala, which, as Stoll himself acknowledges, few other people could have done. The real question raised by Stoll's book is not who died where and how, but does Rigoberta Menchu truly represent "all poor Guatemalans." To understand Guatemalan history in the early 1980s, I recommend Jennifer Schirmer's "The Guatemalan Military Project: A Violence Called Democracy" and Stoll's more persuasive work, "Between Two Armies in the Ixil Towns of Guatemala." "I, Rigoberta Menchu" has its faults but it is a superb introduction to the debate over recent Guatemalan history.

I, Rigoberta criticism detracts from the realities this book portrays
By mvasque2
I, Rigoberta criticism detracts from the realities this book portrays. When I read this book, the way Rigoberta speaks reminds me of the way my father would talk about his upbringing in Guatemala. Although my dad's point of view is from a different perspective than Rigoberta, The repetition and vivid accounts of life in Guatemala remind me of the tales my father would tell my brothers and I. Every time he would retell a story of being in jail in El Pavon, of stealing food to survive, a new detail emerged, often it would be mixed with religious/mythic reflection, over the top generalizations, and of course viewed from a long distance since we were living a new life in the North.

I Rigoberta is a conversation, and as such the person speaking isnt always checking her diary or wikipedia to check that how she remembers it is 100% correct. But the emotions, the repression she felt and the horrors she witnessed are told to us from an honest place.

The King Never Smiles: A Biography of Thailand's Bhumibol Adulyadej, by Paul M. Handley

Thailand’s Bhumibol Adulyadej, the only king ever born in the United States, came to the throne of his country in 1946 and is now the world’s longest-serving monarch. The King Never Smiles, the first independent biography of Thailand's monarch, tells the unexpected story ofBhumibol's life and sixty-year rule—how a Western-raised boy came to be seen by his people as a living Buddha, and how a king widely seen as beneficent and apolitical could in fact be so deeply political andautocratic.
Paul Handley provides an extensively researched, factual account of the king’s youth and personal development, ascent to the throne, skillful political maneuverings, and attempt to shape Thailand as a Buddhist kingdom.Handley takes full note of Bhumibol's achievements in art, in sports and jazz, and he credits the king's lifelong dedication to rural development and the livelihoods of his poorest subjects. But, looking beyondthe widely accepted image of the king as egalitarian and virtuous, Handley portrays an anti-democratic monarch who, together with allies in big business and the corrupt Thai military, has protected a centuries-old, barely modified feudal dynasty.
When at nineteen Bhumibol assumed the throne, the Thai monarchy had been stripped of power and prestige. Over the ensuing decades, Bhumibol became the paramount political actor in the kingdom, silencing critics whilewinning the hearts and mindsof his people. The book details this process and depicts Thailand’s unique constitutional monarch—his life, his thinking, and his ruling philosophy.

From Publishers Weekly
Early on, Handley declares that current king of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej's restoration of the Thai monarchy is, in fact, "one of the great untold stories of the 20th century." The dense history he assembles more than meets the high expectations he sets for himself. Bhumibol, ninth king of the Chakri Dynasty and the first American-born Thai monarch, took power in 1946 during a time when being king was not the most desirable job in the country. Handley offers a substantive history of the monarchy reaching back 500 years, providing the framework for understanding Bhumibol's challenge as king and "leading theologian" following the 1932 coup that turned the old kingdom of Siam, an absolute monarchy, into the constitutional monarchy of Thailand. While rendered politically weak by the coup and subsequent power struggles, Bhumibol has quietly salvaged the relevance of the monarchy while maintaining the image of bodhittsava-like figurehead, a tricky and necessary accomplishment for a country balanced between modernity and ancient Buddhist and Hindu tradition. Dynamic in both his professional and personal life, Bhumibol grapples with insurgencies, growing leftist sentiment and an alliance with the U.S. to combat Communism, finding time along the way to dabble in everything from water development projects to jazz composition. This absorbing and well-researched volume should please Asian history buffs and those interested in the topical challenge of leading a traditional society into the modern world.

Masterful as biography AND propaganda study
By B. Martin
Having lived in Thailand for two lengthy periods since 1965, I knew some of the basics. Mr. Handley has filled in details in highly credible fashion and produced as complete a picture of not only the monarchy but Thai politics as I have seen anywhere. The book is especially good on the ways that much of the belief system of ordinary Thais has been constructed for them by the palace and other royalist institutions and individuals. It's no wonder that North Korea's Kim Jong Il, himself no slouch as a propagandist, has pointed to the Thai system as one of the few foreign models he admires.

Accurate and dispassionate
By Bubbles From Below
This book is scholarly and engaging; I have to believe that Handley was barred from entering the Kingdom as persona non-grata after publishing it. I gave it 4 stars only because it takes a lot of coffee to get through the minutia. But without that level of detail, the author would be at risk of being ridiculed for trying to do a hatchet job on Thailand's Royal Family. The reality is, the King is a product of his time, working in a country beset by ignorance and self-serving "influential families." Most Thais would be horrified to read this book, and will probably reject it out of hand. But their school system and indoctrination will never allow them to read this dispassionately. Having lived in Thailand, I understand why Thai's who have reviewed this book are horrified by it, but as a Westerner, I just view it as a solid piece of historical inquiry. I enjoy life in the Kingdom and the unique Thai conviviality and sense of fun; this book just gives me a better perspective on the reasons for Thailand being the way it is today.

An Introduction to Ontology, by Nikk Effingham

In this engaging and wide-ranging new book, Nikk Effingham provides an introduction to contemporary ontology - the study of what exists - and its importance for philosophy today.

He covers the key topics in the field, from the ontology of holes, numbers and possible worlds, to space, time and the ontology of material objects - for instance, whether there are composite objects such as tables, chairs or even you and me. While starting from the basics, every chapter is up-to-date with the most recent developments in the field, introducing both longstanding theories and cutting-edge advances. As well as discussing the latest issues in ontology, Effingham also helpfully deals in-depth with different methodological principles (including theory choice, Quinean ontological commitment and Meinongianism) and introduces them alongside an example ontological theory that puts them into practice.

This accessible and comprehensive introduction will be essential reading for upper-level undergraduate and post-graduate students, as well as any reader interested in the present state of the subject.

Review
"An exciting, well-written, fun introduction to contemporary ontology."
Choice Magazine

"This is a delightful introduction, both to various ontological topics and to the general aims and methods of ontology itself. Effingham writes with an informal style and a lightness of touch that makes even the more esoteric and technical issues come alive, and the book is an instructive joy to read."
Helen Beebee, University of Manchester

"Nikk Effingham has done a terrific job - he provides fine, clear introductions to a range of important debates, woven through with methodological reflections, whilst his chatty, engaging style conveys the sheer pleasure of becoming an ontologist."
Katherine Hawley, University of St Andrews

About the Author

Topics in the current field of ontology
By Jordan Bell
I have done reading in the history of philosophy and read this book as a summary of ontology. There are scarcely any recent books about ontology that would be worth reading by anyone but an academic philosopher, and the only history of ontology I have found is Van Steenberghen's, which is mostly about scholastic philosophy and is furthermore out of print. Rather than talking about Plato's Forms, or Plutarch's Ship of Theseus, or Anselm's ontological argument, or Occam's razor (which is about what entities we want to talk about existing), Effingham writes about ontology after Quine. Although there are imperfections in this work, there doesn't seem to be any better introduction to ontology. Furthermore, for a reader who wants to know about what professional philosophers are now saying this book is probably ideal.

Some fields ontology borders on are natural philosophy (do we think of fields as existing as things?), ethics (does an organization exist in the same way as a human does? does the economy exist?), programming languages (general questions about object-oriented programming), and theology (can we clarify what we mean by saying that God exists?). Natural philosophy and ethics are lightly touched on in this book but more could be said that a non-professional philosopher could absorb.

I expect that this will be useful as a university textbook. Usually workers in a discipline like to talk more about what people in their discipline now care about then what people in their discipline used to care about or about things they consider only on the border of their discipline, and for Quine, Meinong, David Armstrong, and other recent ontologists, this book is an easily read introduction. However, the literature would be improved by a book written at the same level (but longer) on the history of Western ontology covering the pre-Socratics (e.g. Heraclitus and Parmenides), classical Greek philosophy (e.g. Plato and Aristotle and the Stoics and Epicureans), scholastic philosophy (e.g. Duns Scotus and William of Ockham), and early modern philosophy (e.g. Descartes and Leibniz).

An approachable summary of the field coupled with a great resource collection!
By Matthew Rapaport
Dr. Effingham offers us a broad brush introduction to the philosophic sub-discipline of ontology, the examination of what exactly exists, is real, or is fundamental about our world. It is a modern approach in that he does not much mention the foundations of ontology in the ancient world nor the contributions of Christian scholastic philosophers of the middle ages who did so much to clarify the implications of God's (should he exist of course) infinity (See Peter Coffey "Ontology or the Theory of Being" [kindle available] for a long and detailed 20th century treatment of this). Dr. Effingham focuses exclusively on 20th (and early 21st) century secular ontology, both the positions themselves and various methodological considerations used to argue for or against them. The over-view, intended he says for philosophy undergraduates or perhaps people who are curious bout the subject matter but lack the time or inclination to persue many thousands of pages of dense argumentation, covers a lot of ground in a rather short book. I think he manages to accomplish his goal of coverting the subject from a very high level at the cost of some superficiality. For each sub-section (for example anti-realism about propositions) he mentions and abandons discussion of various approaches in favor of selecting one or a few of those he takes to be quintessential examples for [somewhat] more detailed treatment.

What saves the book from being too simplistic however is the resource collection he adds to the end of each chapter. I've written a few philosophy books and I know how difficult it is (I mostly don't bother) to find and cite extensive references on a large number of narrow subjects. I'm going to guess here that it took Dr. Effingham more time to collect all these references than it did to write the body of the text. I've already used this valuable resource to find other articles (many easily accessible as PDF or Web pages) written by the most well known proponents of these various ontological positions.

In sum, Dr. Effingham accomplishes his purpose. Thanks to both his over-views and his resource collections a student of philosophy or other interested party should have no problem using this little book to penetrate deeply into the field of ontology. I think the price is a little steep for the casual reader who is unlikely to make use of the resource collections, but otherwise this is a good overview of the field as it is today.
