Andy Andrews on Steroids

First let me be very clear, I am a huge Andy Andrews fan. I live in the South and the Gulf Coast is a favorite vacation spot and often a haunt. Andy writes with an "I can't put his book down" touch. You laugh, learn and live better because of his books. All of that said, Andy swings his pen into stronger ink in The Noticer Returns. Strong, powerful life changing and affirming writing will capture the reader in the first few paragraphs. My wife and I stood and wept together over a two page passage where Andy helped us through a very hard place in our life with the recent death of both of our mothers. I am already buying copies and giving them away. This is a must read whether you are twelve or ninety two. Thank you Andy for pulling the gloves off Jones.

Andy is a modern day C.S. Lewis. You will not find a more talented story teller. I devoured this book and went right back and read it again. This book is sure to change how you look at life. This is NOT a book to be missed. If you enjoyed Jones and his wisdom in book one The Noticer you will welcome your friend right back in your life in book two. I highly recommend this 5 star book.

Andy Andrews' BEST book yet!

The author of America's beloved Forrest Gump says, "The Noticer Returns is a magical story that will change how you look at life." Far be it from me to quibble with a New York Times best-selling author, but I believe this a mystical story that will change how readers live."

Via a well-written story, which readers have come to expect from Andrews, the author details a simple, but profound, concept of parenting. The Noticer Returns has just flown to the top of my gift-giving list - especially for expectant parents.

One of the things I liked best was the profound nugget that perhaps America's "greatest generation" really wasn't. Is that blasphemy? Probably. However, Andrews illustrates that the real greatest generation was the one that raised the men and women who are accepted as our finest. Does that make sense? You bet it does. Had the men and women who fought and won World War II been raised by parents (and grandparents) who had different values and had made less time to raise their children, would their children have been willing to go through all they endured for years?

I was stunned to see the book dedicated to someone from my hometown of Atmore, AL, Dr. Will Baker. My guess is this book began with a conversational question from Dr. Baker: "The question is, what is the question?" I think Andy Andrews solved the maddening riddle --as only he could have--and this book is the result. I had to smile when I encountered the character of Baker Larson. Nice additional tip of the hat to Dr. Baker.

I have always believed Andy Andrews to be smart. The Noticer Returns shows new literary maturity--and downright brilliance. I have no doubt that his publisher knows this manuscript was worth the wait. Congratulations to author and publisher.

This book is truly the best of Andrews' unique career that began decades ago with what seemed his chance encounter under a pier with a man named Jones, not Mr. Jones. Just Jones.

Andy Andrews' only problem--and that of his publisher--now becomes . . . how do you top your own gold standard?

Very dense. Proof-oriented. Excellent use of measure theory.

This book is a lot denser than the pretty picture on the cover and the presence of occasional graphs would lead you to expect. It's like 2-3 difficult graduate courses and a bunch of more advanced material for reference all crammed into one place.

The exercises are mostly proof-oriented and would be good preparation for someone looking to do research in this field. I find this book doesn't exactly fit its subtitle of "Applications in Science and Engineering". It is primarily a mathematics book that acknowledges and sometimes discusses applications as motivation for the material. I think it would be more useful to a mathematician than to an engineer or scientist.

My favorite aspect of the book is its no-nonsense treatment of measure-theoretic probability. The book presents the bare minimum necessary for its use, and leaves out some inessential proofs (giving references). I think this is a great way to learn measure theory: first develop an intuitive sense of it and an appreciation of its usefulness, and then you can go back and learn it rigorously from another book. The book provides enough background that you don't need to look elsewhere in order to understand the measure theory used in the text.

I've found a few mistakes in the book, which I find annoying, because I would not trust myself to catch any mistakes beyond maybe chapter 3.

Overall though, I think this is an excellent book. It is about as clear as you can get on the material it covers without watering it down. Lastly, this book covers so much material, most people will not be able to exhaust its contents, and will find it useful as a reference.

Best Mono book yet

I prefer this book to the Mono : Developers Notebook which was also recently published. This book provides a much wider angle view on the .NET cross platform development space. For example, the developers note book covers TK#, this book covers TK# and #WT.

This book is much more architectural in design than the Developers Notebook. So if code is your thing then you may want to evaluate both. I personally prefer architectural perspective because in this case it's more about choosing a direction of development as opposed to learning the structure of the TK# library, which is interesting, but can be gleaned from the online documentation.

This is a must have book for anyone who wants to take their .NET code beyond the confines of the Windows operating system. It's well worth the price of admission.

alternatives to Microsoft

Microsoft and cross-platform?! Sounds like an oxymoron. Yet the book shows how .NET has given rise to this. The key step was Microsoft transferring the specifications of C# and .NET's CLI to ECMA and ISO. This lets third parties write compilers that produce IL bytecode and thence to assembly in a given hardware.

So you could write C# code on some platform, like linux. Then with Mono or Portable.NET, produce x86 binaries.

The authors describe the open source Mono and Portable, and compare these with Microsoft's own .NET offerings. They show that Mono and Portable are quite functional. For example, using Portable, you can write in Java, C#, C or VB.NET and compile.

The book goes into some moderate level of detail about CLI. But if you are a programmer in C# or C, say, and you just want to get native binaries, without wanting to know about CLI, the book is still useful. You can safely skip the CLI sections, without losing the gist of what you need to know. For many of us, whatever language we use, we don't need or want knowledge of a specific assembly language.

Good on principles, shallow on cross-platform libraries.

Okay, I got this book mostly to get into issues common to cross platform development. With focus on say, cross-platform gui libraries, and other cross-platform libraries.

In that I was a bit disappointed, but I was very happy to see how many somewhat advanced design principles were covered, and the breadth of this book. I am hoping that they expand into at least a companion book on maybe the Tao libraries, GTK#, wx.Net and other cross-platform libraries for front-end/interface coding.

I've also been reading the Nantz book for "Open Source .Net Development" and found it to be even more broad, and more shallow. Hopefully we will see some books that cover a bit more depth on fewer topics, and more specifically towards open-source cross platform libraries.

It is definately a good book, and covers a lot into the hows, and why's, but not so deep in any of the topics covered that you get a solid grasp on anything beyond design principles... This gives it a Four-Star rating in my book. It's worth a read for a mid-level developer looking to branch out into more serious development, or a development manager looking for better organization into development (cross platform or not). Don't expect to walk away comfortable on any of the tools that are mentioned in the book.

TALKING AROUND ENGLISH

One thing that this book could have done with is a preface from the author. A preface could have been relied on to tell us precisely what the author thinks his theme is, and that is something we have to guess for ourselves. There are four sections to the book, headed respectively The River of English, English by the Books, English in Action and Beyond English. The linking thread has to be assumed as Machan’s metaphor of the ‘river of English’. However I found this image contrived and unhelpful. Professor Machan starts promisingly by posing the questions we might expect, namely what is ‘English’ and how do we recognise it? To this he adds the odd question ‘why should we care?’ and this question takes the book down some odd byways and along many a detour. By way of proclaiming his ‘motto-theme’ Professor Machan introduces his ‘river’ on p18, invoking the famous statement attributed to the pre-Socratic thinker Heraclitus that one can’t step twice into the same river. Machan interprets this in the same way as I do myself, namely as meaning that one can’t step twice into the same water. All well and good so far, because it is perfectly obvious and sensible to say that, for example, Washington DC and London have stood for centuries on the banks of the Potomac and the Thames and that these identities have been constant. Unfortunately in his very next sentence Machan says that ‘the flowing of time prevents us from visiting the same place twice’, which states a flatly contradictory position. ‘The same’ does not have to imply ‘unchanged’. This is the first instance of what I find to be an exasperating difficulty with this book – the author seems to shift his point of view from one page to the next. Add to this Machan’s interest in political and sociological aspects of the introduction of the English language on to ethnic cultures colonised in the course of British or American expansion, an absorption so deep that he almost loses contact with the topic of the language, and the reader begins to feel a bit adrift. The river that Machan’s narrative reminds me of is the Meander.

One distinction that might have helped would have been between what the use of the phrase ‘speaking English’ denotes and what it connotes. At one point Machan says something to the effect that the use of English ’means’ certain effects on certain cultures. That is an altogether different matter from saying that ‘English’ means a certain language distinguishable by its morphology from other languages. It is almost as if the professor was taking advantage of this semantic swerve to indulge his enthusiasm for recounting certain historical episodes, most of which, I regret to say, interest me a good deal less, although of course other readers will be more of Machan’s mind. Indeed I believe that some of what I perceive as shortcomings in this book are the direct outcome of Machan’s enthusiasm and love for the great English language, something that I certainly share with him to that extent. Machan has his academic hat on when he discusses ‘English’ in the narrower sense, and as you would expect this side of the book is full of excellent and illuminating perceptions. When it comes to the American Indian boarding schools and certain other historical depictions I don’t know whether he is really being academic or whether he is just an enthusiast. What is very clear, to me at least, is that this professor of English is proud of the language and keen to assert, or at least imply, its high status and significance.

For me the book starts to get back on the rails (to vary the metaphor) from the point at which Machan’s variable focus lights on Churchill’s vision of an English-speaking union. In this case we have an acknowledged master of the English tongue who was also a political visionary, and I myself hold the view (probably heretical) that here again we have a case of an eminent man’s enthusiasm for the English language running away with his judgment. If I remember rightly, Machan does not endorse Churchill’s idea but it obviously fascinates him, and probably for its grandiosity. Churchill’s famous oration at Fulton MO certainly illustrates the power of the English language as manipulated by a master, but it seems to me to have had the effect of establishing the cold war as a situation beyond recall. It does not need any liking for Stalin, who was a sociopath, or for the Soviet Union, which was a squalid monstrosity, to recall the history of Russia, particularly its very recent history, and understand how such a speech with its appeal for an exclusive union of Anglophones might have convinced Stalin that he had to put the shutters up and keep the English-speakers out.

Do British and American speakers of English speak the same language? Well, quite obviously they do, say I. However Professor Machan concludes his chapter 9 by referring to the dictum usually attributed to Shaw that Britain and America are two nations divided by the same language. That says quite explicitly that it is the same language, but somehow Machan manages to finish with ‘Many of us Anglophones are separated. And what separates us is the reality that we don’t, in fact, all speak the same language.’ With respect to the professor, I disagree. A word and concept that he gives little attention to is ‘dialect’. Many dialects can be under the aegis or umbrella of a single language; and another distinction that I would have liked to see more of is that between using English words and speaking the English language.

A final word on the legitimacy of ‘It’s me.’ Does nobody recognise such a thing as a disjunctive pronoun in English? In French they don’t say ‘C’est je’ for heavens sake. Back to the overview – this book is full of good things, but it’s not a single coherent book.

About the Author

David Croteau taught about the sociology of media as an Associate Professor (retired) in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is the author of Politics and the Class Divide: Working People and the Middle-Class Left and co-author, with William Hoynes, of Experience Sociology.

William Hoynes is Professor of Sociology and former Director of the Media Studies Program at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he teaches courses on media, culture, and social theory. He is the author of Public Television for Sale: Media, the Market, and the Public Sphere and co-author, with David Croteau, of Experience Sociology.

Stefania Milan (stefaniamilan.net) holds a Ph.D. in Political and Social Sciences from the European University Institute, Italy. She has taught courses on global media and democracy, communications governance, and technology and society at several European universities. She has published widely on social movement media and participatory governance.

Shooting history on the wing

Media-disseminated messages flood our every waking second, affecting us in ways we often do not readily discern. Croteau and Hoynes take the reader on an exploration of these media forces in a sociological journey that walks then leaps from the birth of printed words for the masses to cyberspace for the individual. In the process, we learn a lot along the way. Not only about media, but, about ourselves. Unlike most college course texts in Media and Society (in sociology or journalism), "Media Society" is written in understandable English and is not ruefully Marxian in ideological slant. The work plays it straight down the middle. The authors' goal, to which they succeed, is to provide information that shows the complexity of social relationships in, around and through which information from all sources is sought and internalized by "receivers" then, through feedback, subtly affects the "senders" and subsequent messages as well. Surprisingly up-to-date in information, especially concerning the so-called New Media (a synthesis of current technologies, traditional entertainment programs-turned-political,and old news media). Croteau and Hoynes not only introduce the reader to the media mileau in society, they show how economics drive news coverage. At the same time they explain that media consolidations have not shrunk the markets as first feared, but have actually led--perhaps inadvertently--to an explosion of different, often smaller and more intimate media. The media pie, they attest, is growing bigger as the number of slices inexplicably increase. In later chapters, the authors do a commendable job acquainting the reader with communications theory, especially explaining how opinions are formed. My favorite chapter, given my predilections, are the chapters dealing with media and the political world (and the rest of the chapters in Part 4). The authors also enter the globalization fray by demonstrating not only how American pop culture is transforming traditional cultures (see Barber's McWorld v. Jihad for greater detail), but also how traditional cultures are influencing American pop culture in ways greater than we had intuited. Anyone interested in gaining a sense of how media is impacting his or her daily life and how we, as social beings, react to that impact, should certainly read this wonderful book.

Great Overview

This is a great introduction to media studies. It generally covers a lot of theories and their originators. It does not go into a great deal of depth on any one of them, however, this book is great to get ideas for a theory that one might wish to expand on in detail. I have used this many times for short papers in which I want to incorporate an idea, but do not want the hassle of a lot of in depth research on topic.

One of the best introductions to pharmacoeconomics

Muennig's book provides an excellent introduction to the sometimes complicated world of cost-effectiveness analysis. The exercises are useful for reinforcing the topics introduced in the book. Moreover, the PCEO website provides the links for the data sources that Dr. Muennig mentions in the book.

Keep in mind that this is an introductory text to the subject of pharmacoeconomics/cost-effectiveness analysis. Advanced textbooks such as Drummond,et al' text, Methods for the Economic Evaluation of Health Care Programmes and Gray, et al's text, Applied Methods of Cost-effectiveness Analysis in Healthcare provide good complex problems that take the reader into an in depth discussion of the subject. However, these should be reserved for those who have had a good foundation on the subject.

Dr. Muennig's book provides a great introduction that will prepare students for more advanced material. Another salient feature of the book is that you do not have to have a background in microeconomics to understand the lessons. This is especially important since most of the students who have used this text are from a public health, medical, or pharmacy community. Removing the economic requirements allows students from any discipline understand the concept of cost-effectiveness analysis from a practical viewpoint rather than a theoretical one.

I do recommend using Brigg, et al's text, Decision Modelling for Health Economic Evaluation, for more complex modeling exercises. However, Muennig provides and excellent introduction to decisions analytic modeling that is easy to comprehend and apply.

GREAT book for an introduction to cost-effectiveness analysis and relevant software

I had never taken a class on cost-effectiveness analysis. I used this book, and the publicly-available lab manual and datasets from the pceo.org website, to learn about cost-effectiveness. This book is written in a very accessible manner. The author writes in a way that facilitates the reader's understanding of abstract ideas that are important to comprehend CEA. The book is well structured- chapters build upon one another, and as you go through, you find these abstract ideas solidifying into more tangible and applicable concepts. I strongly suggest working through the chapter exercises and the lab manual (which, again, is free on line with all datasets)-- the hands-on work really adds to the learning experience.
If you've ever wondered "What the hell is a QALY? No- REALLY, what is a QALY?" or "What are sensitivity analyses and how can I do one?"- this book is highly recommended. It covers the bases and more.
Because the lab manual isn't huge, I was able to download and run a free trial version of Treeage software, and use it to complete the exercises before it expired. Totally worth it.

Limited in scope

This book may be useful for someone doing a quick cost-effectiveness analysis, but I found it to be quite limited in scope. It focuses on one way to do a CEA when there are many other options that may be more appropriate in a particular context. I would recommend this book if you are looking for quick guidance and don't want to explore too many options. Otherwise, it might be more useful to consult a book that gives an overview of broader economic evaluation methods, so you can make an informed decision about the most appropriate technique, and in the process learn more about this interesting evaluation technique.

Short and sweet

The Tata Nano is a car that has taken the world by storm. It has opened new paradigms to create products for emerging markets with a completely different mindset. No doubt the center of gravity of the global economy is slowly but steadily shifting to Asia in the twenty first century. India and China will me the mega markets of the future. But the important point to remember is that despite rapid growth, these markets will continue to have low per capita incomes, compared to the developed world. This means, these countries need products that are ultra low cost with high customer value propositions. These products also need to be ultra energy efficient (low running costs) and leave negligible environmental foot print for sustainable development. The Tata Nano is here as a great case study to demonstrate that this is possible. This little book captures the vision of Ratan Tata to bring a low cost affordable family car for the millions of Indians. Great team work translates this vision into a reality.

Working at a target cost of Rs 1 lac (Approx USD 2300) for an affordable fuel efficient car that meets all safety and environmental standards is no small task. The highly talented and committed team is closely supported by Ratan Tata himself at all stages. Many industry experts thought that the cost target was impossible to achieve. Even if the cost target was met, they thought that the final product would at best be a four wheeled, covered auto rickshaw. Tata Motors proved them wrong.

Gary Hamel in his book "The Future of Management" points out that creativity and passion contribute to over 50 percent of human capability and is hardly tapped by today's organizations. Successful companies know the difference. The making of the Nano is a great example on the power of unleashing full human potential at the workplace.

The book is a good narration of the story from concept to the final rollout, including the unfortunate shifting of the plant from Singur in West Bengal to Sanand in Gujarat.

Several challenges in design and the concept of frugal engineering are discussed. The comfort and safety of the customer were paramount at all stages. What finally rolled out was a near miracle in automobile history.

The book gives due credit to all the key members led by Girish Wagh of the Nano team who slogged against all odds to fulfill their mission.
