Russell A. Barkley, PhD, ABPP, ABCN, is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Barkley has published numerous books and more than 260 scientific articles and book chapters on ADHD, executive functioning, and childhood defiance. He is also the editor of the newsletter The ADHD Report. Dr. Barkley is well known for his pioneering research on ADHD in both children and adults. His rating scales are based on more than 16 years of research using prototypes of the scales, and are normed on large samples representative of the U.S. population. An Essential Tool for Therapists

As a therapist and coach focused on individuals with Asperger's, autism and ADHD, I find that understanding the topic of Executive Function is central to helping clients make real progress. Russell Barkley, a leader in the field of ADHD and a pioneer in taking a scientific approach to the condition, has put together the most comprehensive and useful self assessment scales in his book Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale (BDEFS).

I find myself giving this assessment to almost all my adult clients. With Barkley's thorough analysis of different aspects of executive functioning, and comparative normed charts, individuals are able to understand just how severe their own deficits might be. With this information, we're able to come up with solid treatment options utilizing each client's own particular profile of strengths and weaknesses.

Great Source of Print Inspiration

As a designer myself, I'm always looking for sources of inspiration. I especially love printed materials, and this book showcases a great collection of printed work. As the title of this book states, print matters! Using different print techniques and materials make such a difference in how a concept comes together.

This book is divided into 4 sections: Branding & Identities, Books & Pages, Posters & Invitations, and Products & Packages. There's also an index of icons that indicate the various printing and production techniques used on each project. There's 1 to 2 spreads dedicated to each project, a brief description, and the photographs are beautiful and detailed. I do wish that some projects had more photographs.

One could easily go online and get a ton of inspiration, but I like that this is a collection of solid work from around the world. There's good work you could've easily missed online (or possibly ones that are not submitted online). Even if a lot of these projects are not applicable to what you may be doing, it's still wonderful to see the possibilities of print, and the clever solutions designers come up with!

I took off the jacket for easier reading, and turns out the black paper on the book loves fingerprints. :( Overall though, this is a great addition to my Victionary and Art + Design collection.

Disappointing. Extremely One Sided.

Being a football fan I was looking forward to reading this book. Unfortunately, the author could not bring himself to keep even a minimum of objectivity.
I also think that FIFA is a corrupt organization. I also know about the accusations against Havelange in Brazil which means that I am very sympathetic to the author's arguments.
However, the author made sure that he lost all credibility by using a vindictive and biased style. This book is clearly written for the tabloids.
Not to fall in the same trap, here are a few of my objections:
- He displays a hatred for Latins which is totally irrelevant to the subject.
- He makes outrageous claims without proof and cites no sources.
- He explains away anything even remotely unpleasant the English have ever done in the World Cup (are we to believe good English boys don't even make mistakes ?)
- He lies about facts ! (there is a passage where he describes de Argentina-Poland game in '78, his description misses a penalty !!! awarded to Poland) Not that it matters but how can we believe the rest of the story when someone misses the obvious.
- He derides Argentina's "Arab side" ??!! (I thought the country was Spanish/Italian of sorts)
- He only acknowledges Brazilian and English "contributors" (not the most balanced approach when you investigate football, where are the Germans or Italians ? for instance)
- He finds absolutely nothing unusual about the '66 World Cup even when he does with all others (does the identity of the winner have anything to do with that one ?)
But he enticed me to buy the book. A great marketing ploy indeed

While the circumstances under which Argentina won that 1978 World Cup decisive game against Peru are definitely sketchy, I find this a very biased, awful book. In my opinion, this material is a rant worthy of a tabloid, written by a self-righteous author who obviously despises Latin Americans. Knowing the football (soccer) animosity between the English and the Argentines, "How They Stole the Game" appears to be fueled more by envy than an investigative effort. Well, David Yallop should consider writing a book about England's 1966 World Cup victory, which is widely regarded as controversial, if not scandalous. What a humbling effort that could be. Lying and cheating could happen anywhere, right?

Deserves Six Stars

So far, every reader review of this book gives The End of Night five stars. Yes, it really is that good. As someone who knows something about this topic, I am delighted to find an author able to reveal so much that is new to me.

Bogard is not the first important writer to recognize that contemporary culture suffers from a deepening state of "nature deficit disorder." And it is true that our humanity is diminished by the shrinking role that the natural world plays in our lives. The greatest minds in history have always found the infinite in nature. Emerson and Thoreau found it in the forests of New England. John Muir and Ansel Adams found in in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Jacques Cousteau found it beneath the surface of the sea.

But the night sky is different. It is the only natural realm that that virtually all of our ancestors experienced. It shaped our evolution in ways most of us don't recognize. Bogard does a remarkable job of conveying the depth of what we've lost now that it is almost impossible to see the sky as our ancestors saw it.

As a writer myself, I am envious of Bogard's success at blending so many themes into a single, unified book. Most people who've tackled this topic in the past have concentrated on discreet parts of the issue - the nature of light pollution, the cultural history of stargazing, the ongoing efforts to restore darkness, etc. Bogard manages to tell a story that is a remarkable hybrid of the entire subject.

I've never seen a book anything like it before. Yes, it really is that good. Is there a way to give it six stars?

Paul Bogard's The End of Night is an eloquent,lyrical,heart-felt meditation on the night sky. A personal odyssey in search of "real dark," Bogard takes the reader on a journey through the stars and constellations both within our own souls and the magical dark of the sky above. The book is cleverly organized around a descending scale of darkness, from the bright glare of Las Vegas, to the near perfect dark of the desert Southwest. Bogard travels the world, interviewing various experts, from astronomers and city planners, to nurses and janitors working the night shift, trying to answer the question of what the ideal balance would be -- environmentally, physically, and spiritually -- between civilization's need for artificial light and the planet's primal, fundamental necessity for darkness. Though equal parts personal memoir, travelogue, astronomy, science, and nature, ultimately, The End of Night is a call to action disguised as great literature, full of lyricism, metaphor and beauty.

All-In-One Reading on Light and Darkness

When it comes to researching the human relationship to light and the night sky, most books either approach the subject in a historical storytelling manner, a scientific research manner, or less often in terms of the human spiritual relationship to light and dark, day and night. What is so whole-fully engaging about this book is that it combines all of these methods. Bogard's writing summarizes the most interesting facts and history about light and the absence of light, while taking the reader on a narrative journey from the brightest places on the planet to the darkest.

I was so captivated by this book that I read it from front to back in two days, wishing the whole time that I could physically be in the places the book took my mind to. This book will make you want to travel in order to experience a truly dark night sky.

Most importantly, this book notes that the night sky is not only pleasurable due to its beauty, but it is also important way of being reminded of how vast the universe is, how special our tiny planet is, and how disconnected from these systems that support our lives we now are... to the point that it is affecting our physical, mental, and spiritual health.

While reading I felt equally happy about our human technological accomplishments in lighting as I did feel sad about the tragedy that comes with the loss of darkness. But the book ends on a positive note, discussing advances in technology which may help us to solve our problems with the overabundance of bad and unhealthy lighting in the future. Read this book, turn off your computer, turn off your lights, go outside and appreciate the night.

A decent update to a great book

I'm torn over how much I like this version of the Disney Character Encyclopedia. I bought my daughter the 2009 edition, but decided to get the updated one to use as an autograph book for our upcoming WDW trip.

Pros:
It includes a lot of the new characters, from Frozen, Planes, Up, and even The Pirate Fairy.
I personally like the clean new style of the pages, particularly the solid band of color on the side with the character's names - it makes it very easy to flip through to the right page.
They removed some of the more obscure characters that I just don't care about (does anyone even remember the names of the "Dinosaurs" characters?)
The hardbound edition is nice, & the book jacket can help keep your book from getting dinged. The pages also seem a little thicker and nicer quality, but that may just be an age issue.

Cons:
My 12yo daughter much prefers the old style, with each character having a font that fits them or their movie style.
The old edition had more fun facts about the characters, including things like their favorite colors, etc. The new version seems like a little bit drier read.
I miss the 2-page spreads for main characters. Especially using this as an autograph book, that extra space was nice.
Some people may be upset about the characters that were removed. There's no page for the Prince from Snow White or most of the Neverland Fairies, both of which are still available for autographs occasionally.
I haven't actually weighed the books, but the new version seems a little heavier. This may not be a problem if you're just using it as a normal book at home, but lugging it around the parks may get cumbersome. (I plan to carry ours in a stroller.)

Overall I like the book and if you don't have access to the older edition I'd definitely say it's worth getting. But honestly I wish they'd found a better compromise between the 2 editions. Ideally I'd combine them and make one that would work better for my purposes. Or better yet, if Disney had made this book with the intention of it being used for autographs and kept all of the older characters from the parks along with the new additions, I would love it.

We used it as an autograph book and couldn't be happier!

Great book, that is very up to date on Disney MOVIE Characters. We bought this book and used it as an autograph book for our daughter on our most recent Disney World trip. Using this book worked out MUCH better than using the generic Disney autograph books we used in the past. The book contains artwork of the characters along with facts based on the movies they appeared in. Only downfall to this book was that it does NOT contain any Disney Television characters, such as Sophia and Doc McStuffin. Still, an outstanding book and worked much better than the flimsy, generic autograph books. I'll recommend this book to all my friends who are planning to go to WDW and seek out autographs.
