When I started writing this the Selenium documentation was still a work in progress. The official documentation has improved massively, but still doesn't target the beginner audience that I target in this book.

I wrote this book to act as a supplement to the official documentation so that when you finish this book you can read and understand the official documentation easily. If you don't buy this book, then at least read the�official selenium documentation to learn about Selenium-RC.

I interview a lot of testers. And it has been hard to recruit good testers with Selenium experience. I speak to so many people who get stuck at the IDE and don't progress further. I speak to so many testers who could get benefits from using automation but don't think they can understand the 'technical' aspects. And there was nowhere I could direct those testers so they could learn. I wrote this book so that those testers can read through this tutorial, work through it at their own pace, and learn to automate web tests.

When I started writing this there were no good training courses on Selenium. Now there are a few costly options and for many people that cost is a bit off putting, so by creating an affordable tutorial book there are more options in how people approach the learning of this tool.

I wrote this because I want to see more testers with the technical skills to incorporate automation into their test processes. And I know that it can seem daunting before you start. But automation is actually pretty simple. And I hope that by working through this tutorial, anyone can pick up the basics and start doing automated web testing.


This book was released early as part of a beta programme to get feedback from real users about what they actually need. The comments I received from the readers in the Beta programme were great. This book has already taken people who couldn't code to the point where they are writing pretty advanced test suites in Java.

About the Author
Alan has worked in testing for his entire professional career - knocking on 18 years now. And over that time he has done a lot of automation, in a lot of different tools. He has also done a lot of programming in a lot of different languages.

At work, for the last few years, Selenium has been his main tool for our automation. Selenium was chosen because it was open source, and very actively maintained.

This text is a result of the learning he has made while helping the testers that he works with improve their automation and Selenium skills.

Wish it was updated

I'm a COMPLETE Selenium newbie (and know very little about Java) so I got this book so I could learn Selenium step by step since lots of companies are asking for this tool.

Although this book seems to be well written, I'm finding myself having trouble just with the few few chapters. The reason?

In the book it takes you step by step through the installation of Selenium RC.
However, when you go to the Selenium site to download 'Selenium RC' it appears that Selenium RC has been replaced with "Selenium Server".

So the syntax in the book is outdated, it will tell the reader to enter a certain string in the Command Prompt Window and that doesn't work in this new "selenium-standalone-server" folder. With the old Selenium-RC it looks like folders for Java, Ruby, C# etc. are downloaded along with Selenium-RC.. not the case anymore.

Learning new software is challenging enough, it gets really confusing when the book you're referencing is out of date.

Good book to learn the Selenium API

Yes, Selenium 2.0 is now available, but everything you learn in this book carries forward.

This is definitely a book for programming geeks. If you're going to get a lot out of this book, you probably need to know java and be familiar with Hudson/Jenkins. Other topics include Eclipse, SVN, and ANT.

If you're not a developer, or want to use the Selenium IDE, check out "Selenium 1.0 Testing Tools: Beginner's Guide"

Although the book is out-dated a little, it does guide the user step by step with pictures and very well explained information about Selenium and all the other tools to make a very porwerfull automation. A must read to all whom wish to learn Selenium.

About the Author
Jamie Goode is the wine columnist for the UK national newspaper The Sunday Express and he also writes for The World of Fine Wine, Wines and Vines, Wine Business International, Wine and Spirits, and Sommelier Journal. He is coauthor of Authentic Wine: Toward Natural and Sustainable Winemaking (UC Press). The first edition of The Science of Wine was the 2006 Glenfiddich Drink Book of the Year.

A bit schizophrenic in approach and tone.

Admittedly, I had high expectations. I had heard many good things about this book and in many ways it is excellent. Unfortunately, in many ways it is schizophrenic and, though well-written, not carefully written. That was disappointing considering the book is intended as somewhat of an introduction to a general audience.

What I liked about the book is Goode's ability to present issues in wine making that would be very interesting to a general audience. His explanation of biodynamics is excellent, as were his explorations of corks, grafting and wine and the brain.

But here are some unfortunate problems with The Science of Wine that prevent it from being a great book.

The opening chapters on the natural history and viticulture of grape vines are good. But when Goode leaves the vineyard and begins explaining the wine making process, I would advise -- if you are not familiar with the winemaking process -- that you read an actual introduction to it before proceeding.

He jumps from the vineyard to the winery with a chapter on "whole-cluster ferments and carbonic maceration" and accelerates quickly making points out of left field, such as "In carbonic maceration there is therefore a fall in acidity levels that can be quite significant, with titratable acidity (TA) declining as much as 3.5 g/liter and pH increasing by up to 0.6 units."

Goode neither provides a background that gives the reader any context to what this means nor defines the terms. It's a statement that requires illumination -- which is the hard work required of a non-fiction writer. There are numerous examples of this in the book.

There are also editorial errors when Goode uses jargon such as the French word �levage, which refers to the development and early aging of wine before it's bottled. Five pages later you finally get a definition. One wonders whether Goode's editors gave the book a read-through before sending it off to the printer.

Finally, there are long passages in which Goode writes straight prose, followed by long passages where he relies heavily on interviewees to provide multi-sentence material information. The book seems to have two voices which I suspect is a result of repurposing text from news columns he's previously written.

I recommend The Science of Wine. I'm just not jumping up and down about it.

An important education and wonderful reading for all wine lovers

I thought that I knew a fair bit about wine. But after reading "The Science of Wine: From Vine to Glass" I realized that I had been stumbling around for years with a lot of second hand and received wisdom, some of which it turns out was part myth and lore more than fact. This is just a marvelous book for wine lovers. Admittedly, it is technical in many ways. But the author writes with just the right balance of erudition, knowledge, science and example to explain plant biology and wine making science, history and procedures so succinctly that the basic concepts become readily understandable. This is a wonderful book, and an invaluable resource for any wine lover wanting to know more about how the wine in their glass got there and tastes the way it does.

Understanding wine without needing an enology degree

After years of drinking wine and reading periodicals I was looking for something that would help me separate the science from the hype. Jamie Goode has concisely, cleanly, and intelligently touched on subjects from terroir to tasting with objectivity. In the end he acknowledges the sum is greater than the parts, but understanding the parts helps us produce "and drink and enjoy" better wine.

Yet the interview with Dr. Susan Love seems out of place among the first-person treatises, and Marilyn Hacker's "Journal Entries" seems interminable. Other contributors include Maxine Kumin, Safiya Henderson-Holmes, Annette Williams Jaffee, and Amy Ling. People familiar with these authors might want to read their takes on this all-consuming event. Women seeking narrative "support" will find here a renewed sense of purpose. Each woman writes of discovering breast cancer within her body, the attendant shock and fear, and surgery and postoperative treatments; and, of course, no two of their cases are alike. Most striking is the difference that breast cancer has made in their lives. Marilyn Hacker writes that "sexual arousal pulled me into my body, and my body had demonstrated its mortality. . . . [It] made me think of death." Inspirational

I got this book after my close and long time girlfriend was diagnosed with breast cancer. I have read it straight thru and will share it with her. I can't say enough for the brilliant writer's stories of courage and their tenacity to face life head on! Even for those of us fortunate not to have to go thru this terrible cancer ordeal, it is a book of courage and strength and about what really's important in this life. the books were great! As a fiction-lover

If you're buying this to catch up with the television show that was cancelled, don't. The show was supposed to be based on the books, but they were completely different in my opinion. However, the books were great! As a fiction-lover, I liked how the story incorporates some Greek mythology and entwines it with the witching world. I purchased the author's other series "Blue Bloods" too since I enjoy her writing so much.

Lots of inconsistencies, total disconnect from the first book

This book really missed the mark for a conclusion to a series. It was almost like there was a completely different author writing this book. There was a disconnect with the characters and it was basically a bunch of useless information that didn't have anything to do with the storyline. I started to notice it towards the end of the second book. The characters dialogue was written more like 8th graders having a conversation instead of gods who have been around since the beginning of time. Even some characters are written differently as if the author forgot about them in the first book. For example, Kristy, in the first book was a single mother of four kids all under the age of 5 and in this book she just had two kids. It wouldn't seem important other than the fact that Freddie dated her. There was no consistency or connection with this book and the first book. Makes me wonder if someone else wrote it and how it was even approved by an editor. It was a very disappointing conclusion to what could have been a great series.

Great Ending

I am sad to see this series over. With such a great character base, this series could go on and on. This book was a bittersweet book. It ended things and leaves a satisfying feeling. The only downside with this series is that I think the author tried too hard explaining the characters rather than showing them. I wish the characters where more interactive with eachother besides having the author fill in the gaps with history.

Overall, this is a great ending to the series and I don't know how it could end any other way to make it complete.

The approach is that of a physical chemist or materials scientist, and the text is geared toward students of chemistry, materials science, and engineering. This textbook should also be useful to practicing corrosion engineers or materials engineers who wish to enhance their understanding of the fundamental principles of corrosion science. It is assumed that the student or reader does not have a background in electrochemistry. However, the student or reader should have taken at least an undergraduate course in materials science or physical chemistry. More material is presented in the textbook than can be covered in a one-semester course, so the book is intended for both the classroom and as a source book for further use. Dr. E. McCafferty conducted research in corrosion science for over thirty years at the Naval Research Laboratory.   He was also a part-time Professorial Lecturer at George Washington University.

Excellent introductory text

I've bought this book for a one semester undergraduate corrosion engineering course. I must say that I'm absolutely thrilled with this book! The author has a concise and enjoyable writing style which allows for hours of continuous reading.

The book covers quite well the most fundamental topics in corrosion science. I was particularly happy with the author's coverage of polarization - a topic whose importance can't be stressed enough, and which can be quite tricky for first-timers. The Wagner-Traud models are presented satisfactorily and the Tafel extrapolation is well explained. Pourbaix diagrams must be pointed out as one of the strengths of this book, since the author essentially builds one of them from scratch - applying Nernst's equation and equillibrium constants - in a very ditatic fashion.

The books also covers important topics such as pitting, crevice corrosion (with mechanisms), coatings and inhibitors. The author also describes many corrosion science techniques, among which is AC impedance, which has been very well covered.

While this book is definitely suited as an introductory textbook, I would not recommend it as a thorough reference book for professionals. Even though this might be seen as a flaw, I've still decided to give it a 5 stars.

Well written and understandable.

I also used this book for a Corrosion Engineering course. I initially purchased it as a supplementary text after finding the required text (Jones) difficult to understand and error-prone. It has the most comprehensive description of electric double-layer theory I've seen in any text so far. It covers thermodynamics thoroughly and has an entire chapter on Pourbaix diagrams. It appropriately makes use of chemical activity in place of concentration as in some other texts. It uses the calorie instead of Joules (possible drawback?). It has nice example problems throughout the chapters and end of chapter problems with selected answers in the back. The chapter on kinetics has proved very useful to me for both theoretical and experimental aspects in that it explains mixed potential theory well and contains tables with corrosion rate data obtained from various studies. The images and diagrams are all nicely laid out. The sections within the chapters are not numbered which forces me to page around a bit to remind myself where I am in the chapter. Since purchasing this book I've browsed through about three or four other corrosion texts and still like this one the best.
