As an asexual and someone who shamelessly enjoys characters in love and characters in dangerous situations (like when, say, a murderer is after one of them) and especially characters who are in love in dangerous situations, I was SO excited to read this book, and I found myself incredibly let down. I'm going to start with the good, which was the dialogue between Malachi and Bran was hilarious. Malachi's wit had me laughing out loud at points, and his back and forth with Bran was natural and amusing. It was a cute book, but I found myself bored and not really wanting to finish the book after the killer was revealed.

The character relationships and family dynamics, while backstories were varied and given only in pieces that didn't make everything immediately known to the reader, were a bit cliched at times. As a reader I shouldn't be able to pick up on the fact that "Bran's head swam" or "Bran's head was swimming" was used often enough to me to say 'hey, this was used really recently... like, two pages ago.'

The sex scenes were excessive and unnecessary and didn't really serve to move the plot of the book forward in any way. It did show certain aspects of Bran and Malachi's developing relationship, but, again, it seemed... excessive. I stopped keeping track of how many there were after I think five.

There are asexuals who do things for the sake of their partners, yes, and there are asexuals who have sex simply for the stimulation and not because they are sexually attracted to anyone, but a conversation about Bran being willing to do things with Malachi despite his sexuality and the fact that he'd never really be interested would've suffied. Or even a singular sex scene showing that development and dynamic of their relationships rather than... however many pages of sex scenes I found myself skimming over, bored because - oh right, I have no desire to have sex. I certainly have no interest in reading about it. Again, it seemed excessive and didn't really seem to serve any sort of purpose for moving the plot of the book (you know, imminent danger, people trying to kill one of the boys) forward.

Other people may have really enjoyed the sex scenes, from what I skimmed they over they weren't terribly written, so if that's the kind of thing you're into, go for it. Overall, personally, I was just... really let down by this book. It was an amusing, quick read, but I won't be downloading the sequel.

I'm so glad I did

Oh my, I just finished reading and I am still smiling. The blurb intrigued me and I thought why not, take a chance. I'm so glad I did. Bran is shy, sweet and asexual. Malachi is short, outgoing and sweet on Bran. They were so cute together and accepting of each other. I loved how Bran grew stronger in who he was and what he wanted, which was Mal. I had never read a story where someone was asexual. I knew the term but not what it meant. This was an adorable story that showed me a little bit about what it's like. Thank you to Michaela Grey for putting this story out there!

Lovely representation of asexuality

When I started the first chapter of this book, I thought I knew exactly where it was going- the characters acted as exposition pieces that gave a lot of information in a short amount of time. However, as you get into the story and get to know the characters, they begin to flesh out, and the exposition dies down so that you can sit back and enjoy the tale.

You start with the likable Bran, an asexual who loves to bake and attends university, and Malachi, another university student who seems to have whatever he wants. The two meet properly, and the love story goes in a pleasantly different direction from what I expected.

This story avoids the tropes of jealousy, of lack of communication, and others that normally make you roll your eyes in romance stories. The characters do fight, yes, but they have reason to, and the communication between those who care about each other was refreshing. The sex scenes are there, but they are brief and easy to skip if you feel the urge to do so. They weren't overly explicit, which was something I appreciated.

I won't go into too much more detail, but this is a nice representation of an asexual character without having their aceness shoved into your face. That said, this is representation of a romantic asexual, so I hope in future works we'll see other variations of aces. I'm hopeful, as the author presented other sexualities in the same casual, matter-of-fact manner that I liked about Bran's orientation.

As with Lakdawala's other books, this is a very enjoyable read. It is easy to follow, leaves you with a smile on your face, and a keen sense that you know exactly what is going on with Lakdawala there to guide you. Once you have worked your way through the book, you are left with the confidence to play the opening and the suggested lines.� Even though I possibly should know better, I am beginning to feel like a sucker for enjoying Lakdawala's books so much. If I were a young player looking to improve my game and understand an opening, I would most likely be picking up his books at the same pace people buy overpriced candy and popcorn at the movie theater, though these books last a lot longer and you do not end up feeling guilty afterward.

About the Author
Cyrus Lakdawala is an International Master, a former National Open and American Open Champion, and a six-time State Champion. He has been teaching chess for over 30 years, and coaches some of the top junior players in the US.

Good but confusing at times

My chess rating runs around 2100. I used to play the Colle and was interested in the new improvements since then.

Lakdawala has written a VERY entertaining book on an opening he plays regularly.

I really like the way he presents the opening. However, most of these are white-to-play-this-and-win plus a positive thinking pep talk (salted with interesting and often funny [to me] metaphors). In other words, Lakdawala does not present a critical analysis of the opening, instead it's a defense. However, there are glimmers of how Black could change the course of the game with different moves, move orders, and ideas. Not all the games are at the GM level and a computer is mentioned often (despite the introduction ranting against computer analysis and needing a computer proof opening that computers and theory will not dismantle).

Typically when I lean a new opening it's helpful to follow the main lines so the confusing thing is the format (which can interfere with they way I process chess information). Typically the format, inserting questions (mostly useful) adds to the sense of understanding. The problem is that there are times when the diagrams and the questions are off the main line. The feeling is one of having to go back to decipher what he's talking about.

I do like the fact that most "average" player should be able to follow the lines due to the abundance of diagrams.

Please note, despite the 416 pages, there is less on the Colle than I had hoped for... a good percentage of the book is Lakdawala entertaining us with his sense of humor. (e.g. his dog eating grass and ceremonially vomiting it up) This book is not encyclopedic which is good for the new learner and not so good for those who may already have a good sense of the opening and want more depth.

Another thing that should be understood, this is an introduction to the whole Colle complex. It covers the traditional idea of playing for e4, or the new so-called Phoenix idea of playing a reversed Slav with b4, or the "brutal" (Ladawala) Zukertort system. In other words, after reading this book you will need to head for one of the books that specialize in one of these lines.

While the Colle is essential a "one-trick" pony (if it doesn't work then white is in trouble), it is a very good and reliable trick that new players have used effectively to stay out of early trouble against superior players. (The London, played well is considered "unbeatable" while the Colle is open to debate.)

The reason this book scores so high (for me) is because it also happens to be a tactical manual. Ladawala refers to the various attacking motifs and how to look for and combine them. Some of them are advanced ideas and the newer player may have to search the meaning of some of the ideas mentioned. Still it's a good attacking manual.

So if you are fairly versed in chess, looking for a solid opening with explosive attacking potential over the board, and are willing to learn a sense of timing of when something big should happen... give this book a read.

You will want to play the Colle when you are done with this book!

Well written. Fun, which is not typical of chess books. Author shows how the basic pawn structures can arise out of a variety of move orders. I don't use the Colle as a primary opening anymore, but it can really throw an opponent in certain move orders. I'm looking forward to using it a little more now!

Good Opening Book for Players who Want to Avoid Sharp Dangerous Openings

I started buying Cyrus' books because he used to be my chess coach about 25 years ago. I like his Colle book because most of the players in New Mexico are not used to this system which means they are likely to misplay the opening. As an older player, I'm over sixty now, I needed a opening repertoire that was more positional and less tactical. It's like a golfer that has to adjust his swing as he gets older so that he can still compete against the younger players. All of his opening books fit the bill in that respect. I would recommend his books to anyone who wants or needs to transition from sharp tactical lines to positional chess.

This is a great little book that gives a good overview of Alexander the Great's life. There is enough information here that middle/high schoolers could use it as a spine and branch off from there to research specific parts of his life.

About the Author

Louis T. Culling was a respected magician whose contributions to modern occultism are unique. One of the initial members of the Secret Order G∴B∴G∴, he served as the head of the Southern California section of the Order. He is the author of many books, including The Pristine Yi King and Sex Magick.

Carl Llewellyn Weschcke (Minnesota) was the owner and chairman of Llewellyn Worldwide, the world's oldest and largest metaphysical publisher. He played a seminal role in the rise of Wicca and Neo-Paganism in the 1960s and 1970s and has been called "the father of New Age" for his public sponsorship of occult subjects. Weschcke also served as the 7th Past Grand Master Ordo Aurum Solis.

A shortcut in Magical Growth

The Great Brotherhood of God closed the doors to their order in 1936. They ceased all normal functioning in 1938 just like the founder of the magickal order had commanded. Louis T. Culling was a member of that order and he was commissioned to write this present volume by the Founder Mr. Russell. Louis T. Culling wrote it and published it so people could independently use the program to initiate or begin to start their magical practice. This book is a do it yourself kit and a short cut, straight away to the goal. Their is no external teacher you are your own teacher. But do not be fooled this is no easy road. This curriculum is hard work.

The current edition is a re-release with commentery by Carl Weshke owner of Llewellyn publishing. His offers several good explanations for concepts that need to be clarified and I found his input most helpful in several cases. There were point in the book were I felt the text was repeated word for word in several places. Such redundancy could become very annoying.

Mr. Russel who was a student of Aleister Crowley is the person who wrote the curriculum and started the order. Aleister Crowley believed at the time of writing that humanity was entering in the Aeon of Horus. What is special about this age is that people would not be reliant upon parochial religious authority. Secret orders would no longer be needed and people ,who are stars move independently of their own light and volition." Crowley believed that people were Gods in the making. The goal of this program was to have "knowledge and conversation with Your Holy Guardian Angel"

The program written in the book is not just a series of technique but a curriculum that is meant to be followed as written. It is easy to understand but do not be fooled you have to do the work. For the first two weeks you will keep a dream journal writing down every dream as you remember it. This facilitates conversation between the conscious and subconscious mind. As about two weeks of keeping a dream journal you will keep a magical journal that describes what you want to be. Every day you write down what you want to be. After a given period of time stated in thee book the student will do two things. One is to take a vow to be truthful to ones self and to see event in your life as communication between your Holy Guardian angel and yourself. Be careful though and do not think that everything that happens in your life happens to come from your Holy Guardian Angel. That was easy enough no?

Now comes the hard part, the Three day Retreat. The student secludes him or herself and does a ritual several times during the day and keep a journal of his or her experiences. A shortened version of this retreat happen once a year. The curriculum continues with meditations on Crowley's book of law and find it;s meaning for you. The book deals with raising energy using magical techniques between a magical couple in order to create a magical child . More advanced parts of the curriculum will involve communication with various deities along with a warning that the Deities are not coming from outside of you but rather are rising up from with in. Mr. Weshke include a glossary of terms that is very beneficial in understanding the text if you get confused. In the back there is a a bibliography that allows the student to go further in depth on an y concept that may interest them. This get 4.5 broomsticks out of 5.

solid training for the serious magick student

Promising a "shortcut to Initiation," this book offers seekers exercises and information they can use to become more advanced magicians and more complete humans. A classic book by Louis T. Culling outlining the complete magick curriculum of the G.B.G., a secret occult order that took much of its teachings from the work of Aleister Crowley, this title offers solid training for the serious magick student. With information on a variety of occult mysteries including sex magick, true words of power, trance experiences, divination, calling the elements, using animal totems to propel spiritual growth, and more, there's plenty to explore. What I love about this book (an expanded, revised, and recently released version of the original)is the additional commentary provided by Carl Weschcke, extracting the "meat" of Culling's teachings and expanding the concepts presented so that magick workers of all varieties glean ideas they can use in their own practices. While Culling's portions of the text present a lot of information that is highly useful to the developing magician, Weschcke contributes by bringing these ideas into focus for the modern reader. There are also little unexpected gems cast throughout by both authors that offer experienced Initiates clues to taking their Great Work even further. Definitely recommended.

This book kills the Occult

This increditable gem is one of the all time greats. It kills the occult. That's right it brings an end to the occult movement. The term occult means hidden knowledge. Once all the secrets are published and out in the open then we are no longer under the occult, secret, hidden mercy of groups and orders. We are now in the age of self enlightenment. No more lodge dues, brown nosing for the next degree, rigit rules, corrupt leaders just pure magick. This book is everything you need to self-iniate. It is a great book. Lots of information. Has some informative history. It lays it out. I would put it up there as one of the best Magick books of all time.

From Tython to Coruscant!

First of all I really like this book it's everything I expected, detailed and authentic with lots of information on everything a jedi should know. How to wield a lightsaber, how to choose a padawan and the history of the jedi order. With the vault, the extra comments in the book,and items from the masters, knights and padawans(and sith lord) to ever have owned this book, it's worth the extra money. I would reccomend this to anyone who loves Star Wars

BTW what is the little thing in the top left corner of the vault? I've heard many different guesses like "they're the suns of Tatooine" or "It's Yavin and Yavin IV". I think its the two moons of Tython. Are there any other ideas?

Use the Force, you must....

I just picked up this book a few days ago, and I must say....I'm really impressed. It not only garners information on the Jedi, the temple, the philosophies, but it gives insights into the characters starting with Yoda. The introduction by Luke Skywalker, from the Yavin 4 academy; shows the history of the book, and how it was passed down from Jedi to Jedi. It features many different "notes," handwritten anecdotes (by the different Jedi who possessed the book) that are humorous and insightful. The illustrations are helpful, and they detail weapons, ships and techniques that Jedi often use. It also has different lightsaber hilts, styles and such.

A breakdown of the book:

Part 1-Introduction to the Jedi Order
This part contains information on the Jedi Code (there is no death, there is the Force) and much needed history of the Jedi. The book is written well before the events of Eps1-6, so much of the information on the current activities are absent. Yoda even comments "Updated, this section should be." Whereupon Dooku says, "So update it, old one!" Another hilarous note, Yoda comments on knowing Grand Master Fae Coven (author of the Jedi Code chapter) as a youngling, and Ahsoka comments "Yoda was a youngling?!"

Part 2-Jedi Initiate

This section deals with "younglings" (as seen in Ep2) and how they begin their studies. It also features the trials needed to be undertaken for advancement into padawan status. It also details the three pillars of the Jedi (Force, knowledge and self-discipline). This section has many valuable insights into the minds of Dooku, Anakin and Obi-Wan.

Part 3-Jedi Padawan

Next up, this section deals with many aspects of training, lightsaber combat styles and building a lightsaber. It also mentions the cultures and politics of the Republic, as well as the Trials and Knighting ceremony. This section has a LOT of notes, and some notes by Sidious. It is interesting to note that Anakin mentions "phrik" deposits on Gromas (and should mention it to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine). This is the site of one level of "Dark Forces" (the PC/PSX game) and you blow it up. Also, Sidious mentions that the "Outbound Flight project" was a "Jedi failure," to which Luke responds that they are alive in the unknown regions (Luke and the New Republic found the survivors of the Outbound Flight project some years AFTER the Battle of Endor, and Luke had "The Jedi Path" at this point). Extremely interesting.

Part 4-Jedi Knight

This includes the roles and duties of Jedi Knights, the three basic classes (consular, sentinel and guardian), Alter abilites, advanced lightsaber techniques and taking on padawan learners. Also, it has a brief history of the Sith, and the dangers of the Dark Side. It also has the requirements of being a Master and Grand Master, as well as a short brief on transcending death (apparently Anakin didn't really read this section while in possession of this book. Luke's comments on this are fascinating).

Overall, I would give this book a 5 out of 5. The production value is awesome, and the information is enlightening. I would recommend this book for any fan. Add it to your collection, and you won't be disappointed. Also, if you are a fan of the Saga Edition of the Star Wars RPG, this book will really enhance your game sessions. The information is presented in easy-to-reference manner, all you have to do is look up the title heading. It will give your Jedi characters different views on the Jedi themselves, as well as much-needed lightsaber combat forms. Get it, read it, enjoy it. Kudos to Daniel Wallace and the team for creating a high-quality, multi-purpose book.

Better than I expected.

Just received my Jedi Path Vault package and opened it up. I'll start out by saying that even the exterior packaging is very high quality. It came in a nice black cardboard box within another box, and within that had a wrapper that held the doors shut (which was hard to remove without damaging). Very simple setup - remove a plastic tab that's on the battery compartment and it's ready to go. Pushing down on the button does exactly as described. The vault doors slowly open, and the door rises to some nice sound effects and blue LED backlighting. The cover of the book is a nice leather (probably faux leather) bound jacket, and the pages all have the appearance of being hand cut. Inside the book, there was a coin, a used napkin, and an iron-on patch as per the description. Overall, I'm glad I spent the money on this, it seems like it's a great collector's piece, well worth the steep price.
