A SERIES OF SEMI-DIALOGUES WITH THE FRENCH LITERARY PHILOSOPHER
By Steven H Propp
Gilles Deleuze (1925–1995) was a French philosopher who wrote about literature, film, and fine art in addition to philosophy; he often co-wrote books with Flix Guattari. Claire Parnet is a philosopher and reporter in France who conducted these interviews.

Deleuze wrote in the Preface to the English edition of this 1977 book, “This book… aims to highlight the existence and actions of multiplicities in very different domains… It seemed to us that the great project of English and American literature was to get close to such multiplicities: it is in this literature that the question ‘What is it to write?’ has undoubtedly received the answer which is closest to life itself… This book is made up of such a collection of musings on the formations of the unconscious, on literary, scientific and political formulations… the first plan for a conversation between two people, in which one asked questions and the other replied, no longer had any value…”

The first chapter begins, “It is very hard to ‘explain oneself’---an interview, a dialogue, a conversation. Most of the time, when someone asks me a question, even one which relates to me, I see that, strictly, I don’t have anything to say… Even reflection, whether it’s alone, or between two or more, is not enough. Above all, not reflection. Objections are even worse. Every time someone puts an objection to me, I want to say: ‘OK, OK, let’s go on to something else.’ Objections have never contributed anything. It’s the same when I am asked a general question. The aim is not to answer questions, it’s to get out, to get out of it.” (Pg. 1)

He states, “When you work, you are necessarily in absolute solitude. You cannot have disciples or be part of a school. The only work is moonlighting and is clandestine. But it is an extremely populous solitude. Populated not only with dreams, phantasms or plans, but with encounters. An encounter is perhaps the same thing as a becoming, or nuptials. It is from the depth of this solitude that you can make any encounter whatsoever…” (Pg. 6)

He recalls, “I was taught by two professors… We simply plunged into Hegel, Husserl, and Heidegger; we threw ourselves… into a scholasticism worse than that of the Middle Ages. Fortunately there was Sartre. Sartre was our Outside, he was really the breath of fresh air from the backyard… Among all the Sorbonne’s probabilities, it was his unique combination which gave us the strength to tolerate the new restoration of order. And Sartre has never stopped being that, not a model, a method or an example, but a little fresh air… an intellectual who singularly changed the situation of the intellectual. It is idiotic to wonder whether Sartre was the beginning or the end of something. Like all creative things and people, he is in the middle, he grows from the middle.” (Pg. 12)

He observes, “Philosophy is shot through with the project of becoming the official language of a Pure State. The exercise of thought thus conforms to the goals of the real State, to the dominant meanings and to the requirements of the established order… Everything which belongs to a thought without image… is crushed and denounced as a nuisance.” (Pg. 13-14)

He reveals, “My encounter with Flix Guitarri changed a lot of things. Flix already had a long history of political involvement and of psychiatric work. He was not a philosopher by training, but he had a philosopher-becoming all the more for this, and many other becomings too. He never stopped. Few people have given me the impression as he did of moving at each movement; not changing, but moving in his entirety with the aid of a gesture he was making, of a word which he was saying, of a vocal sound, like a kaleidoscope forming a new combination every time.” (Pg. 16)

He observes, “In reality writing does not have its end in itself, precisely because life is not something personal. Or rather, the aim of writing is to carry life to the state of a non-personal power. In doing this it renounces any claim to territory… Why does one write? Because it is not a case of writing… To write has no other function: to be a flux which combines with other fluxes---all the minority-becomings of the world.” (Pg. 50)

He states, “There are no fluctuations of language, only regimes of signs which simultaneously combine fluxes of expression and fluxes of content, determining assemblages of desire in the latter, and assemblages of enunciation in the former, each caught up in the other. Language is never the only flux of expression; and a flux of expression is never on its own, but always related to fluxes of content determined by the regime of signs.” (Pg. 116-117)

He summarizes, “There is no general prescription. We have done with all globalizing concepts. Even concepts are hecceities, events. What is interesting about concepts like desire, or machine, or assemblage is that they only have value in their variables, and in the maximum or variables which they allow. We are not for concepts as big as hollow teeth, THE law, THE master, THE rebel. We are not here to keep the tally of the dead and the victims of history, the martyrdom of the Gulags, and to draw the conclusion that ‘The revolution is impossible, but we thinkers must think the impossible since the impossible only exists through our thought!’ It seems to us that there would never have been the tiniest Gulag if the victims had kept up the same discourse as those who weep over them today.” (Pg. 144-145)

This is a stimulating a provocative series of discussions with Deleuze, and will be of interest both to those “new” to Deleuze, and those who are seriously studying him.

Pre-Thousand Plateaus, Insightful Indeed!
By A Customer
Here, Deleuze and Parnet give very illuminating and interesting form to many of the ideas that will later be expressed w/Guattari in A Thousand Plateaus. Excellently translated and insightful-- as though one were listening to Deleuze with an acquaintance speaking of the direction of his theory in the 80's. Highly recommended.

Smoke rises on the horizon. Two ships burn. Bodies float everywhere... It's almost a bad haiku. Three months later, a high-tech, high-budget, and really overkill motorcade screeches through the night-time streets of Los Angeles. Only one hard- nosed and bitter old cop takes note, and woe unto whoever the poor sap is on whom he'll dish out some good old-fashioned law. Elsewhere, meanwhile, a cruel and conflicted mother commits the gravest of sins and sets in motion a chain of events that stretches from her now-deceased abusive husband to the very end of her life. We meet other survivors of the disaster that befell Marnatha City three years earlier and find that the City touches different people in different ways... But it's always a bad touch. This is the third volume of the Ursa Major Award-winning adult anthropomorphic thriller Heathen City, written by Alex Vance and illustrated by an international team of artists.

Big Fan of the series. Really enjoyed it. Picks up just after the events of the first volume, although it doesn't show how they got out of the situation they were in, guess maybe they'll do a flashback to it in volume 4?
The art styles shift and vary every few pages, i think there were about a half dozen or so artists so it is to be expected, it goes from quite good to quite rough looking.
Be aware however there is a bit of violence (blood, death, etc) and bad language (really filthy in some places) in this comic, also a sex scene between a cop and a prostitute.
The plot line is really getting interesting and the ending, well, quite unusual and interesting, i won't spoil it for you but its an interesting twist.

Dearest Friend and Reader,

Welcome! I am just thrilled and honored that I get to share this journey with you as you discover your highest level of beauty and health.

I know how confusing it can be to navigate the numerous conflicting and ever-changing health philosophies that are out there. Fruit is healthy. No, fruit has too much sugar! Be sure to count fat grams. No, wait. Make that to count carbs! The conflicting advice used to always make me wonder if I was doing something wrong. What are we supposed to believe, and where do we turn for the answers?

Well, it really doesn't have to be that complicated. The goal of my book is to show you fundamental principles that will teach you how to unlock your highest potential beauty and achieve optimal health. As you'll find, it is actually very simple. And in our ever-progressing, complicated world, simplicity is a beautiful thing. We need not get swept up in the chaos of gimmicky new diets and worry if we are missing out on the Holy Grail of instant weight loss and wrinkle freedom. The truth is, it doesn't exist in the hot new diet. But there is an answer, and the exciting news is that it is right in front of you.

I want you to know right off the bat that this book is not about restriction in any sense. We will not be counting calories or grams of carbs, and we will not be restricted to eating in one particular way to fit into one dietary category. You can discover your ultimate health and beauty whether you are a vegan, vegetarian, raw foodist, pescatarian or omnivore. The broad concepts I outline in this book will work for everyone, and you will see and feel results, whatever your current diet. There is a phase, or eating plan, that works for everyone—regardless of lifestyle, budget or personal tastes.

Once we get rid of restriction and embrace the idea of consuming an abundance of the right foods, we free ourselves up to understand, internalize and apply the true tenets of health and beauty. With just a few simple changes, you will look and feel better than you ever have before. That is my promise to you!

And the best part? You'll have all these benefits without counting calories or obsessing over tiny portion sizes or eating bland microwaved foods! You will be feasting on fresh, delicious and filling foods that will nourish every cell in your body so that a deeply healthful, radiant glow permeates from within. Your skin will become brighter, your hair shinier and your body more toned. Belly fat will drop off, and your eyes will sparkle with newfound energy. You can achieve true health and beauty naturally with food. This diet is that powerful.

I believe the word "health" is synonymous with the word "beauty." A healthy body is a beautiful body. Healthy skin, which is a reflection of our internal health, is beautiful skin. My definition of beauty is that it should be deep, lasting and magnetic, and grow from the inside out. The key to this kind of vibrant beauty is ongoing cleansing. When your cells and blood are clean and detoxified, your body is able to function optimally and you are able to maximize the use of plentiful minerals in your food. Your skin will radiate from the inside out, excess pounds will melt away and your body will achieve its perfect weight. We've all seen the kind of beauty I'm talking about. A woman who just glows. Now you, too, can sparkle with true beauty.

I wrote this book to help free you from wasting time and energy struggling with debilitating new diets and cleanses, wearing layers and layers of concealer and foundation to hide dulled, flawed skin and, yes, squeezing into your "fat" jeans. I promise you that it is possible to achieve your most beautiful self and your perfect weight—while eating abundantly! And once you stop wasting time and energy worrying about your skin and weight, you can focus on your real goals and dreams.

Believe me, I have had my own share of weight and beauty battles. I struggled for years to control my weight as a superthin, calorie- and fat-gram-counting marathon runner. I was always swallowing a gnawing hunger, and at five foot five I was barely one hundred pounds, with hair as coarse as steel wool. Then I went in the totally opposite direction (yes, I admit it!). After graduating from college, I moved to Sydney, Australia, where I landed my first job. For my job, I was mingling with the A-list celebrity crowd, riding yachts and constantly eating out at fancy dinners and, yes, drinking expensive wine and partying.

I was spending all my time involved in activities I thought were so glamorous. Hey, you're relaxing, I told myself. Have another glass. Well, what I thought was healthy food—soy burgers, fat-free milk, pretzels, yogurt, sushi and grilled veggie and mozzarella sandwiches—added over thirty pounds to my small frame! My skin was a dull, zit-covered mess, and I believe that I looked older than I do now. I stopped working out regularly because I just didn't have the energy. Instead I turned to soy milk cappuccinos and Diet Coke to give me periodic "boosts" throughout the day.

When I developed a roll of fat on my once flat-as-a-board belly, I looked in the mirror and decided that I couldn't take it anymore. It was at that point that a new and highly influential person came into my life: an Australian holistic nutritionist who ran a nutritional detox center in Sydney. By chance (since I went so infrequently) I saw a small flyer of hers at the gym.

I had never before tried to do anything remotely detox related, but I was desperate for something to help and decided to give it a shot. This gorgeous, blond forty-something-year-old with sharp green eyes assessed my bumpy skin, my dull hair and the ridges in my nails and gave me a knowing look. She shook her head when she saw the thick coating of mucus on my tongue. The first questions she asked me were, "How often do you go to the bathroom?" and "Do you get bloated and gassy often?"

To which I replied, "What? Who cares about that stuff? I want to lose weight and make my skin look better!"

She smiled. "That stuff is what it is all about, my dear."

I was put on a stern detox program, cutting out dairy and refined carbs, like pretzels and white rice, from my diet immediately. This Aussie guru also made me concoctions for my liver with nineteen medicinal plants, my first introduction to the bounty of herbs in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. She also made her own face and body creams, and she forever changed the way I thought about my skin. She helped me see that the skin is our largest organ and functions like a mirror of what's going on inside the body: it offers us a direct reflection of the health achievements we make and the obstacles with which we struggle. My skin held all the answers, and all I had to do was pay attention to what it was telling me. Likewise, I learned that from 60 to 70 percent of what we put on our skin is absorbed through the skin into our bloodstream and liver. That certainly changed the way I thought of beauty products for good!

She jolted something awake in me and inspired my voracious passion for both natural health and skin care. I stopped partying and going out to dinner parties every night and read all the information and books the nutritionist gave me. I spent a lot of time with her, shopping at health stores, sipping herbal tea, and walking along Bondi Beach, where we both lived, having health discussions for hours. We became very close friends! The more I followed her advice, the better I looked and felt. The weight I'd gained melted off, and my skin started to clear up. I had so much energy that any thought of "needing" a coffee got banished from my mind! The results were incredible.

I knew I had to make a complete break from my current path in life. I didn't want to simply change the way I ate; I wanted to profoundly change the way I lived. Learning about natural health and skin care and the natural healing properties of plants made me jittery inside. I was so excited! Even though I still had no idea how this new interest would fit into my life, I was thrilled about the unknown possibilities. I could no longer ignore the dull ache in my heart telling me that I was on the wrong career path, in a corporate field that was not my real passion. I had found something I was incredibly passionate about: learning more and more about how food itself is medicine and a powerful tool for achieving our highest beauty.

Once I came to realize what I truly wanted, the flame was lit and inspiration shifted into action. I was in a serious long-distance relationship with someone back home, but I knew deep down that it wasn't right. Within one week I quit my job, declined law school for the following fall, broke my apartment lease on Bondi Beach and dumped my boyfriend. There was no turning back now!

I walked into an STA travel office and, with a few thousand dollars saved from working, bought an around-the-world ticket with fifteen stops across five continents. At first I thought I might travel for two or three weeks, but once I started out, I could not stop. The more I learned and saw, the more I wanted to explore…so I ended up traveling for a total of about three years to very remote communities, for dollars a day. I stayed in guesthouses, ashrams, my tent (for many months across Africa), bungalows, on floors (even a few times on the floors of Asian Laundromats), and sometimes in bus and train stations with my backpack strapped to my body. I started out alone but sporadically met up with old friends and constantly met new people along the way as I weaved my way through Laos, China, Mongolia, Nepal, India, Swaziland, Indonesia, New Zealand, Cambodia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Croatia, Peru, Malaysia, Botswana…over fifty countries in all.

My adventures were at times rough, dirty and even dangerous (though nothing really bad ever happened), but the truth is that I gleaned an incredible education from my three-year around-the-world journey. All these diverse countries had one thing in common: they had their own secrets to health and beauty. Each had an impact on my perspective on health, and in each country I deepened my understanding of true beauty and learned powerful beauty tips I still treasure today.

Thailand was the first country I ventured to after I left Australia, and it marked my initial immersion in the wonderful world of ancient and beautifying Asian fruits, especially the legendary durian. I feasted on the abundance of local fruit, and it composed a good 70 percent of my diet. It was then that I began my lifelong obsession with young coconuts, eating them every day, and like many Thais, I began using coconut oil on my hair and my body. Acquainting myself with all the culturally important fruits made me feel closely connected to the earth there, as well as to the warm, friendly and deeply Buddhist Thai people. When I came back to the United States, I continued to study coconuts and discovered that coconut oil is amazingly beautifying: it is cholesterol free and rich in medium-chain good fats that nourish the skin.

Hunan Province, tucked away in southwest China and home to many hill-tribe villages, is another one of my favorite parts of the world. I spent several weeks bicycling across rice paddies and sleeping on the floor of rooms in guesthouses, covered by mosquito nets. I noticed that the women with beautiful, glowing skin there consumed goji berries, no dairy, very small portions of meat and lots of local vegetables. I became fascinated with the depth of natural health knowledge so prevalent in China's culture, including its focus on ancient medicinal herbs and ways to enhance the chi (or life force) of the body by treating it as a holistic unit, rather than treating only one organ at a time.

My time in the Himalayas, which included months in Nepal, Kashmir and other parts of northern India, was simply magical. It was there that I first discovered yoga, which would have a lifelong impact on me. I also enjoyed greater exposure to Ayurvedic teachings and, in particular, became fascinated with the spice turmeric, which was first given to me by a tiny elderly woman as wrinkled as a raisin who ran an Ayurvedic healing center in a mountain nook. The turmeric really helped give my skin a vibrant glow. I was thrilled to discover other natural plants that can truly clean the blood and enhance the skin. I loved the spirit of the people of India, and to this day it remains one of my favorite countries.

When I finally made my way to Africa, I was mesmerized by the gorgeous, velvety skin of African women. From teenagers to women well into their sixties, they had poreless and perfectly moisturized complexions, without a zit or wrinkle in sight. I discovered that in countries like Ethiopia they use raw shea butter on their skin, which comes from a native nut and is scraped out fresh. It furthered my belief that pure and natural moisturizers are far superior to synthetic, petroleum-based ones, which most women in the Western world use. Diet issues aside, I realized that with our plethora of eye creams, serums, sunscreens and thick, heavy night creams, American women are suffocating their skin. I decided right then that I would take the cue from African women and use natural skin products that truly nourish the skin and allow it to breathe.

When I came back from my world journey, it was not easy for me to integrate back into American life. I was trying to put it all together and figure out how to combine my passion for skin care, health and nutrition. The first thing I did was get a job at one of the biggest beauty companies in the world. I wanted an inside glimpse into the beauty world to see if I could use my experiences there. But big corporate beauty was definitely not for me. I did, however, get a great education about the industry, and I learned some tricks of the trade that provided me with a foundation from which to make my dream of running my own company a reality.

Lost 5 pounds by the end of this book
By Christy
So why not give this book 5 stars? Because the diet is on the extreme side and leaves me with more questions than answers. For example, where do I find nutritional yeast? First of all, Kimberly Snyder did a wonderful job explaining how our stomach breaks down each type of food and why she recommends eating foods in a particular order to make it easier for our bodies to digest and then absorb nutrients. Her theory is that if it's easier for our bodies to digest, absorb, and eliminate, our bodies have more time to heal itself (this is where the beauty part comes in) rather than just focusing on digestion 24/7. Second, it makes sense if we cut out animal protein, dairy, alcohol, and anything else that makes our bodies acidic, from our diets and replace them with produce so that we'll be healthier and maintain our weight. It's just hard to swallow that information and put it into practice on a daily basis. This book gives you so much knowledge and then you end up feeling bad that you aren't putting everything into practice.
As you can tell, Kimberly Snyder pushes vegetarian and vegan diets as the healthiest route but she does say you don't have to give up meat all together. She recommends no more than three dinners a week with meat, preferably not land animals. She also highly suggests eating raw since none of the nutrients are lost to cooking. Again, it makes sense but dang it I like to steam my veggies! The one thing Miss Snyder recommended that I had never heard about was eating fruits by themselves and nothing afterwards for at least 20 minutes since our bodies absorb them so fast (when eaten by themselves) and make are intestines very acidic. She says that having fruit with anything else will make everything inside our intestines putrefy and take a really long time to be eliminated.
I like the green smoothie recipe and can definitely do it 5 mornings a week but not too excited about her oat groat recipe. Miss Snyder has three different phases for the detox so really everyone could manage one of those phases depending on your conviction. If you are hard core, you'll give up meat, eat mostly raw foods, go organic, and be popping tons of pills (probiotic supplements, digestive enzymes, and magnesium-oxygen supplements) each day. If you're like me, you'll be drinking the green smoothie, increase the days you're vegetarian, and just overall watch what you eat and in what order. The book is a wealth of knowledge and I can imagine most people will think it's not realistic. But, take your new found knowledge and at least try several changes and see what difference it will make.

Incredible advice for anyone up for a challenge! (But it's worth it)
By Bella
I love this book. I first read it almost 2 years ago and I've been slowly working the principles into my life. Why so long? This is NOT a fad diet book. This is a book about how nutrition is absorbed and digested in the body and it's purpose is to give you the healthiest and in turn most beautiful body possible. For a long time I felt a little irritated by the book, thinking it was too extreme. But after giving it a couple solid run through chances (full 30 days of following it to a t) I can tell you that this lifestyle is the healthiest one I've ever followed. Yes it is not an easy one to follow. But that's partially because, well, the recipes are not very good.

I think Kimberly Snyder is an incredible intelligent and talented nutritionist. Her advice is sound and proves to work in my own life. But she isn't exactly a gifted chef. Obviously she likes her own food, but if you're more of a foodie like myself, you're going to make yourself crazy trying to follow this book. So here's what I do: study the principles and look elsewhere for more recipes. If you look at either raw vegan, high raw, OR vegan-gluten free books, you'll find some good stuff. I personally love the book RAW VEGAN NOT GROSS.

Another tip is this: BDS is just a starting point. Another review said she had more questions at the end. Me too. I listen to Kimberly's podcast, read her blog, and keep up with her other books. There's a lot to learn from this woman!

Not a realistic way of eating for everyone...
By Corrine D. Jennings
I'm torn in half about this book. In some ways I love it, in other ways I don't. It's definitely not a fad, it's a complete lifestyle change, but it does still feel like a diet! The author is very knowledgeable, and she presents you with a great deal of helpful information, which I think everyone can benefit from in some way. But I don't think this plan is realistic for everyone. For the first 2 months, I was able to stick to it 100%, but I found it extremely difficult. I felt hungry and deprived all the time, and I did not feel like I had any energy like I was supposed to by eating this way. I lost 10 pounds in the first 2 weeks, which was not my main goal! I was already very skinny (115 lbs at 5'5") and getting down to 105 that quickly made me feel and look very sick. So I had to start incorporating more fattening foods back into my diet, I couldn't give up meat and dairy completely, especially with the fact that I'm a breastfeeding mother. That's why I don't think this eating plan is designed for everyone. I think it would be great for people who are already vegetarians or vegans, but it's not an easy transition for those who aren't. Some of the suggestions do help to optimize digestion, I did notice a huge difference in how my stomach felt when I was sticking to the plan perfectly, I didn't have the usual pain, bloating and gas that I get after eating. One of the rules of this plan is to eat "light to heavy" meaning small meals for breakfast and lunch and your biggest meal for dinner, with no snacking in between! I found this rule to be particularly hard, because of my family's work schedule, we aren't able to eat dinner together and lunch has always been our biggest meal. I tried switching it around for the sake of following this plan, but we ended up having to eat separate meals all the time, which got to be very costly and difficult. So this plan isn't easy for people who work nights and aren't able to eat a big meal at dinnertime. It's also very hard if you're the only one in your household that is doing it. Having to make separate meals and watch others eat the foods that you can no longer have can be a real test of willpower. Eating this way also requires a lot of preparing things ahead of time, like making the green smoothies, soaking nuts for a day before you can eat them, etc. It might not be realistic for those with busy schedules and not a lot of free time to plan their meals ahead. The food pairing aspect of this plan is pretty helpful, and if that is the only part of this that you stick to, you will notice a difference with that alone. But you can find that information on the internet, it was stuff that I already knew, but it is also very hard to stick to. Especially the part where you can't drink any water 1/2 hour before or an at least an hour after eating. What about people who need to take medication or vitamins with their meals? Or breastfeeding mothers who need to keep their fluids up? Some of the other food pairing no-nos are hard habits to break because they are staples in most people's regular diet, and it's not easy to find a satisfying alternative. So all this being said, I'm still trying to stick to the plan as best as I can, but I know that realistically I can't do it perfectly. I'm still drinking the green smoothies or just having fruit for breakfast (fruit has to be eaten by itself as one of the food pairing rules), and I alternate my big meals so that some days I'm having it for dinner, other days for lunch so that I can still eat with my family sometimes. I still have a big raw salad for one of my meals and my heaviest meal I always start with some raw veggies and then eat the "worst" thing last. I think this book is a good source of information for people to design their own eating plan that works best for them. I think it can help you lose weight and help optimize your digestion, but I don't know if all the claims the author makes can really work for everyone. I certainly hasn't given me more energy, and I don't feel it has helped make my skin look any more beautiful. I don't know if eating this way can really cure some of the medical conditions she describes. Maybe if you have the will to stick to it 100%, and if you do, more power to you!

disappointed with the kindle edition
By sleepydavid
Bought this kindle version of the washington manual of pathology previously and was disappointed because THE KINDLE EDITION DOESN'T COME WITH A CODE FOR ACCESS TO THE IMAGE BANK!
AND THE POOR FORMATTING OF THE BOOK WHEN READ IN iPhone (the table of content didn't even show up!)
Returned the book within one day and lost a few dollars as a result. The fact that no access to the image bank will be provided with the book should have been addressed clearly on the amazon page and the formatting issues with kindle text books (which also applies to other books I have bought) should also have been addressed by the editing team prior to publishing it.

The Ones We Trust, by Kimberly Belle

A moving and evocative exploration of grief and guilt in the wake of one family's devastating loss

When former DC journalist Abigail Wolff attempts to rehabilitate her career, she finds herself at the heart of a US army cover-up involving the death of a soldier in Afghanistan—with unspeakable emotional consequences for one family. As the story of what happened comes to light, Abigail will do anything to write it.

The more evidence she stumbles upon in the case, the fewer people it seems she can trust, including her own father, a retired army general. And she certainly never expected to fall in love with the slain soldier's brother, Gabe, a bitter man struggling to hold his family together. The investigation eventually leads her to an impossible choice, one of unrelenting sacrifice to protect those she loves.

Beyond the buried truths and betrayals, questions of family loyalty and redemption, Abigail's search is, most of all, a desperate grasp at carrying on and coping—and seeking hope in the impossible.

There's a thin, fragile line that separates us all from misfortune. A place where life teeters on a razor's edge, and everything boils down to one single, solitary second. Where either you will whiz past the Mack truck blissfully unaware, or you will slam into it head-on. Where there's a before, and then, without warning or apology, there's an after.

For the past three years, I've rewound to those last before moments, moments I was still blissfully unaware I was about to be blindsided. I've tried to pinpoint the very spot when tragedy struck. It wasn't when Chelsea took her last breath, though that was certainly a tragedy. No, the tipping point was somewhere in the days leading up to her death, when her story was barreling like a deadly virus across the internet, snowballing and mutating and infecting everyone it touched. Infecting her with words I wrote and sent out into the world. I guess you could say I poisoned her with them.

To the rest of the world, Chelsea Vogel looked like any other white, American, middle-class mother in her early thirties.

On the dowdy side of forgettable, one of those women you acknowledge with a bland smile as she pushes her cart by yours in the grocery store, or idles patiently in her car while you hang up the gas pump and climb back behind the wheel of yours. You see her but, for the life of you, couldn't pick her out of a lineup five minutes later.

But underneath all that dull suburban facade burned a big, bright secret.

I had no idea of any of this, of course, that rainy Tuesday afternoon I walked into her slightly shabby offices south of Baltimore to interview her for iWoman…com, the online news magazine I was reporting for at the time. I only knew that as the founder and CEO of American Society for Truth, Chelsea was an outspoken opponent of gay rights, one who preached about Godordained sexuality and the natural family to anyone who would listen. And people seemed to be listening, especially once she became a regular contributor on conservative news senders.

"I'm Abigail Wolff," I told the receptionist, a slight woman by the name of Maria Duncan. "I have an interview with Mrs. Vogel."

Maria offered me coffee and showed me to the conference room. I noticed her because she was pretty—short pixie hair, a fresh face, clothes that were fashionable but not flashy. But I remember her because two weeks later, she slid me the story that ended my career.

"Here," she said to me that day, shoving a file across the table before I'd settled into the seat across from her. "This is for you."

I'd known when she asked me to meet her at a Cracker Barrel in Linthicum Heights just south of Baltimore, it wasn't to become friends over sweet teas and biscuits. But never in a million years would I have guessed what greeted me when I opened that file. Dozens and dozens of photographs, each one dated and timed, of a naked Maria and Chelsea. In bed, on the backseat of a minivan, atop both of their desks.

"Who took these?" I said, flipping through them. Judging by the low resolution and awkward angles, I was placing my money on a hidden camera, and an inexpensive one.

Maria shook her head. "Doesn't matter. They're real. There's a DVD in there, too, with about twenty different videos."

I pushed everything back into the file and closed the cover. Maria was well above legal age, probably somewhere in her mid to late twenties. That didn't mean, however, that Chelsea Vogel wasn't a predator, or that the affair wouldn't be one hell of a story…and a byline.

But still. If this story hit, Maria needed to know what she was in for.

"What do you think your family will say when they open up their morning newspaper and see these?"

Her chin went up. "There's no one to see it. The only family I had left died last year."

"Your friends, then. Do any of them know you're sleeping with your female boss?"

"I don't." She glanced down at the table, then lifted her gaze to mine, clinging to it like maple syrup, thick and sticky. "I just moved here from Detroit. The people here aren't exactly friendly."

I took this to mean she hadn't made very many friends yet.

I gestured to the envelope between us. "So, what's this about, then? Is it to get attention? To prove to people that you're loved? Because I can guarantee you people are going to think a lot of things when they see these pictures, but not much of it's going to be nice."

"I don't give a shit what people think. This isn't about getting noticed. This is about Chelsea Vogel taking advantage of me. She was my boss, and she used her position of authority to make me think she loved me."

"So this story is about revenge."

"No." Maria's answer was immediate and emphatic. "This story is about justice. What she did to me may not be a crime, officially, but it was still wrong. She should still be punished."

"Take it to the HR department. They'll make sure Chelsea Vogel is fired, and they'll be inclined to keep things quiet."

"Chelsea is the HR department, don't you get it? American Society for Truth is her project. And I don't want to be quiet. I'm done being quiet. I'm the victim here, and I want Chelsea to pay."

I told myself it was the righteousness in her tone, the resolve creasing her brow and fisting her hands that convinced me, and not the idea of my name attached to a story that I knew, I knew would go viral.

"I'll do what I can to protect your identity, but you need to be aware that there's a very real probability it'll get out, and when it does, every single second of your life will be altered. Not just now, but tomorrow and the next day and the next. This scandal—and make no mistake about it, this is a scandal for you just as much as it is for her—will follow you for the rest of your life. You'll never be anonymous ever again."

She swallowed, thought for a long moment. "I think I still want you to write the story."

"You think? Or you know?" I leaned forward and watched her closely. Not just her answer but also her body language would determine my course of action.

"I know." She straightened her back, squared her shoulders and looked me straight in the eye. "I want you to write the story."

So that's what I did. I wrote the story.

I did everything right, too. I checked facts and questioned witnesses, volunteers and employees at neighboring businesses and the building janitor. I made sure the evidence had not been digitally altered, compared the dates and times on the photographs to both women's work and home schedules. I held back Maria's name, blurred out faces, released only the least damning of the pictures, the ones where there was no way, no possible way Maria would be recognized. I did every goddamn thing right, but within twenty-four hours of my story breaking, Maria's identity, along with every single one of the photographs and videos in clear, full-color focus, exploded across the internet anyway. Just as, if I'm being completely honest with myself, I knew they would.

Two weeks later, on a beautiful January morning, Chelsea Vogel hung herself in the shower. I wasn't there when it happened, of course, but that doesn't mean I wasn't responsible for her death. After all, those were my words that made her drive those five miles in her minivan to the Home Depot for a length of braided rope, then haul it home and knot it around her neck. I knew when I put them out there that both women's lives would be changed. I just never dreamed one of them would also end.

Secrets are a sneaky little seed. You can hide them, you can bury them, you can disguise them and cover them up. But then, just when you think your secret has rotted away and decayed into nothing, it stirs back to life. It sprouts roots and stems, crawls its way through the mud and muck, growing and climbing and bursting through the surface, blooming for everyone to see. That's the lesson here. The truth always comes out eventually.

But I can no longer be the one to write about it.

2

It's the strangest thing, running into someone famous.

First, you get that initial rush of recognition, a fast flare of adrenaline that quickens your pulse and prickles your skin with awareness. Oh, my God. Is that…? Holy shit, it is him. Your body gears up for a greeting—a friendly smile, a slightly giddy wave, a high-pitched and breathy hello—when you suddenly realize that though this person may be one of the most recognizable faces in greater DC and the nation, to him you are an unfamiliar face, a stranger. You are just any other woman pushing her cart through the aisles of Handyman Market.

And then you notice the red apron, the name tag that proclaims him Handyman, the light coating of sawdust on his jeans, and realize that to Gabe Armstrong, you're not just any other woman.

You're any other customer.

"Need some help finding anything?" he asks.

I am not a person easily flustered by fame. I've interviewed heads of state and royalty, movie stars and music moguls, crime bosses and terrorists. Only one time—one time—in all those years did I lose my shit, and that was when I interviewed Gabe's older brother Zach. People's Sexiest Man Alive, the Hollywood golden boy who chucked his big-screen career to die in a war that, on the day he enlisted, fifty-seven percent of Americans considered a mistake. But when Zach aimed his famous smile on me that afternoon, a mere eleven days before he shipped off to basic training, I forgot every single one of the questions I thought I had memorized, and I had to fire up my laptop on the hood of my car to retrieve them.

But not so with Gabe here, who is not so much famous as infamous. There's not an American alive who doesn't remember his drunken performance at his brother's funeral, when he slurred his way through a nationally televised speech, then saluted the Honor Guards with a bottle ofJack Daniel's clutched in a fist as furious as his expression.

And his image has only gone downhill since. Cantankerous, obstinate and hostile are some of the more colorful words the media uses to describe him in print, and their adjectives lean toward the obscene when they're off the record. Part of their censure has to do with Gabe's role as family gatekeeper, with his thus-far successful moves to thwart their attempts at an interview with his mother or brother Nick, crouched a few feet away when three bullets tore through Zach's skull.

But the other part, and a not-so-small part, is that he answers their every single question, even "How are you today?" with a "No fucking comment."

I clear my throat, consult my list. "Where do you keep your tile cutters?"

Gabe doesn't miss a beat. "Snap and score or angle grinders?"

"Wet saw, actually. I hear they're the best for minimizing dust."

"True, as long as you don't mind the hike in price." When I shake my head, he continues. "How big's your tile?"

"Twelve by twelve," I say as if I'm reciting my social security number.

And that's when the absurdity hits me. I'm discussing tile saws with Zach Armstrong's younger brother. One who so closely resembles his big-screen brother that it's almost eerie. If I didn't know for a fact that Zach died on an Afghani battlefield last year, I might think I'd stumbled onto a movie set. one for The Twilight Zone.

Gabe motions for me to follow him. "I've got a table model with a diamond blade that's good for both stone and ceramic. It's sturdy, its cuts are clean and precise, and it's fairly affordable. What are you tiling?"

"A bathroom."

He stops walking and asks to see my list, and I know what he's doing. He's checking it. Inspecting for mistakes. Looking for holes. If he had a red pen, he'd mark it up and tell me to revise and resubmit.

Gabe glances up through a lifted brow. "What's the sledgehammer for?"

"To take out the built-in closet. It'll give me another three feet of vanity space."

My answer earns me an impressed nod. "Are you planning on moving any fixtures?"

They could almost be twins, really. Same towering height and swimmer's build, same dark features and angular bone structure, same neat sideburns that trail down his cheeks like perfectly clipped tassels. I take all of it in and try not to let on that I know exactly who he is.

"Nope. Same floor plan, just a thorough update of pretty much every inch. I'm fairly certain I can do everything but the plumbing and electricity myself."

"I can get you a few referrals, if you'd like." He looks up for my nod, then returns to the list. I give him all the time he needs, leaning with my forearms onto the cart handle and waiting for his assessment.

Gabe may be Harvard educated, but I happen to know I've made no mistakes on that list. I approached this project as I do every other these days: by scouring the internet for relevant articles, handpicking the most important facts and condensing them into one organized document. My bathroom has been content curated to within an inch of its life, and that list is perfect down to the very last nut and bolt.

He passes me back the paper with an impressed grin. "You've really done your homework."

"I'm excellent at research."

"Almost excellent." He taps the list with a long finger. "You forgot the silicone caulk."

I straighten, shaking my head. "No, I didn't. I already have three tubes at home from when you guys had your buy two, get two free special."

"What happened to the fourth?"

"I used it last week to re-caulk the kitchen sink."

Amusement half cocks his grin. He nudges me aside to take charge of my cart. "Come on. We'll start on aisle twelve and work our way forward."

And that's just what we do. Gabe loops us through the aisles, loading up my cart as well as another he fetches from the front as we check off every item on my list, even the items Gabe assures me there's no way, no possible way I will ever need. I tell him if it's on the list, to throw it in anyway. The entire expedition takes us the better part of an hour, and by the time we make it to the register, both carts are bulging.

He waits patiently while I fork over half a month's salary to the gray-haired cashier, then helps me cram all my goods into the back of my Prius.

"Are you sure you don't need anything else?" He has to lean three times on the hatchback door to click it closed. "Because I think we might have a couple of rusty screws left in the back somewhere."

"Old overachiever habits are hard to break, I guess." I grin.

He grins back, the skin of his right cheek leaning into the hint of a dimple. "It was a pretty fierce list. Very thorough. One might even say overly so."

"I told you I was—"

"Excellent at research," he interrupts, still grinning. "I remember. But preparation is only half the battle."

His tone and expression are teasing, and I imitate both. "Are you doubting my competence?"

"Hell, no. Anyone who can make a list like yours is fully capable of looking up instructions on the internet. All I'm saying is, if you happen to run into any problems with the execution and need an experienced handyman…" He cocks a brow and gestures with a thumb to his apron, Handyman embroidered in big white letters across the front.

I laugh. "I'll remember that."

This is when he smiles again, big and wide, and it completely transforms his face. It's a smile that's just as fierce, just as sexy and magnetic as his lookalike brother's, yet somehow, Gabe makes it his own. Maybe it's the way his left cheek takes a second or two longer to catch up with his right, or the way his eyeteeth are swiveled just a tad inward. Maybe it's the way his eyes crinkle into slits, and that dimple grows into a deep split. Whatever it is, Gabe's smile is extraordinary in that it's so ordinary, lopsided and uneven and unpracticed for red carpets and film cameras, and in that moment, I forget all about his famous brother. In that moment, I see only Gabe.

Suspenseful, well written, and haunting
By Book Binger
Words can be deadly, states Abigail Wolfe in the first chapter of The Ones We Trust by Kimberly Belle. Abigail, an ex-journalist, explains that three years ago, a woman who worked at the American Society for Truth approached Abigail. Maria told her that the CEO coerced her into an affair. This was surprising to Abigail, because the CEO was an outspoken opponent of gay rights. Abigail writes the article based on Marie’s information. However, Abigail’s carefully crafted words morph into an ugly media storm. Two weeks later, the woman hangs herself in the shower and Abigail ends her career in journalism.

Three years later, Abigail still feels guilty. However, Ben Vogel, Chelsea’s young son, contacts Abigail with evidence that casts suspicion on Marie’s credibility. Ben wants Abigail to investigate Marie because he thinks she might be “the bad guy” and instead of his mother. Out of guilt, Abigail agrees to investigate Marie.

Shortly after this, Abigail finds an envelope on her doorstep. In the envelope is the uncensored transcript of a medic’s testimony on the death of Zach Armstrong, an army soldier. Zach Armstrong’s death is famous. Zach, a handsome actor, had enlisted in the army, along with his brother Nick. During a patrol, their platoon of 35 soldiers was forced to stop because of a mechanical problem. A battle ensued but only one soldier died — Zach.

The army will not tell his family who shot Zach. So, Jean Armstrong, Zach’s mother, and Gabe, his brother, have demanded a congressional investigation into Zach’s death. In a twist of fate, Abigail’s father and godfather, both three-star generals, are the ones being investigated.

Abigail reads the uncensored transcript and sees that there were 36 soldiers in the platoon and not 35, as claimed. Ricky Hernandez is the 36th soldier and Abigail believes he witnessed Zach’s death. Abigail takes the transcript to Gabe, who works in a version of Home Depo. She had met Gabe earlier, when buying supplies for a bathroom remodel. Abigail liked Gabe instantly and Gabe seemed to like her.

When Abigail presents the transcript to him and explains she is an ex-journalist, Gabe explodes. However, Abigail persuades Gabe to give his mother the transcript. After meeting Abigail and reading the transcript, Jean decides Abigail should help her write Zach’s story.

From here on, Abigail and Gabe investigate Zach’s death together. As they spend more time with each other, Abigail and Gabe become closer. But Gabe’s trust issues cause tension between the two of them.

Belle knows to how pace her story so that you keep turning pages. Her prose is clean, yet descriptive, and her characters come alive. Belle also explores a gamut of issues–family loyalty, trust, and guilt — and takes you on an emotional roller coaster. Long after you finish reading this book, you will contemplate your own beliefs and morality.

Really Good Contemporary Romance
By JBronder Book Reviews
Abigail used to be a reporter, but a story she wrote three years prior burned her badly. She now hides in a safe job. But a chance encounter leads her to Gabe, the brother of a soldier that had given his life in Afghanistan. Gabe has his own problems with PTSD and lives as a recluse. But when Abigail finds a note on her porch with the events that really happened behind Zach’s death she finds herself falling back into a reporter’s life and wanting to give out the real details.

Unfortunately it seems that the powers that be want to keep that information secret and will go about any length to do so. But with Gabe and his mother encouraging Abigail, she will keep fighting to get the information out there. Along the way Gabe and Abigail may also find a way to heal from their pasts.

I really enjoyed this story. I felt bad for Abigail. Here she is trying to get over the loss of her reporting career. But she just can’t completely stand back and let the truth get buried. And Gabe, poor sweet damaged Gabe. How can you not hope and pray for the best with him and Abigail.

This is a great story that you will like. It has a lot on a very touchy subject. The war in Afghanistan is such a hard topic with so many people both agreeing with it and hating it at the same time. And it’s so easy to forget about the soldiers and their families and everything that they face. I recommend this to anyone that is looking for a great mystery and a wonderful romance with both people being damaged and untrusting.

I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Secrets, Intrigue, And A Real Romance

This is a great book. It's paced well, you start off fast, and you keep going. I liked the suspense, the secrets, the intrigue. I bought it because of the beginning, it just pulled me right in. Yes, that's why I bought it and I'm glad I did.
