It’s a marvel of bleak economy: Nicholas, going nowhere in his video-store-clerk job, discovers a foot-wide black vortex in an old storage room of his apartment building. His caustic sometime-lover, Nakota, christens it “the Funhole” and begins inserting experimental items: a jar of insects (they combine and mutate), a live mouse (it is ripped apart), a human hand from the morgue (it reanimates), and, finally, a video camera, which records a self-eviscerating figure of awe-inspiring dreadfulness—Koja only teases its description. Nakota becomes obsessed with the Funhole (a place of “blood and sex and revelation”) and is driven mad when it is Nicholas, not her, whose flesh becomes gloriously infected. The grungy, sweaty two-person drama, delivered in Nicholas’ vulgar ramble, widens to include additional viewers of the videotape who become fast new acolytes. Seemingly influenced equally by Clive Barker, David Cronenberg, and a particularly distasteful nightmare, this entry into the body-horror canon carries with it the kind of fatalism horror readers prize—it’s going to end badly, for sure, but just how badly? A dark journey into the heart of human suffering.

The inaugural novel of Dell's Abyss horror line is a doozy. A darkly nihilistic story of transformation, lost hope, and manipulation, it is at times a bit too oppressively bleak and navel-gazing for its own good, but Koja's poetic, stream-of-consciousness prose and fertile imagination keeps things moving at an interesting pace. The horrors of this book are not the horrors of the external, of what can hurt you from outside, but of the horrors that arise from within the abyss of your own heart, and that, as Nicholas, the protagonist, says, is the scariest thing of all. A really powerful and unique novel that perfectly set the tone for the rest of the Abyss imprint.

Kathe Koja, at least in the past, has a reputation for furthering the genre known as the New Weird. Some say her work helped pioneer the field. This book is her first novel, published to much acclaim, including winning the Horror Writers of America Bram Stoker award and the Locus Award for First Novel, and receiving the first nomination by a horror novel for the Phillip K. Dick award for Best Paperback Original. This all occurred several years ago; as of 2009, I needed to order a used copy online to get a hold of a copy. Having read The Cipher, I appreciate these turn of events.

Koja's first novel contains a dusky, smoke-laden, sour-tasting narrative of chipped nail-polish and second-hand-store bought cheap clothes, where jaded, artistically-inclined, barely surviving young slacker/hipsters wander in from their low paying jobs to curl up within their barely livable urban dwellings, engaging in spiteful, malign relationships with each other, buoyed by intoxicants and mean intentions. In this midst of this mix, a gateway of unknown direction and anomalous effect erupts into their lives like an unforeseen pustule found poking out of from your cheek in the bathroom mirror one morning. The gateway's transmutative effect on the objects thrust around and within it, and subsequently the characters' own bodies and lives form the abnormal body of this very unconventional novel.

The narrator's off-kilter, at times almost stream-of-consciousness speech and Koja's striking vocabulary turn this book into an irregular, corrugated ride. It's like driving by a car wreck between a school-bus full of orphans and nuns and an hundred-foot long cow filled with gangrene and pus; either you can't look away or you'd never attempt to approach it in the first place, once you learned of its nature.

And that's ultimately why The Cipher occupies its place in the publishing world: people who crave this type of fiction will revere it especially for its style and resulting status; others of a more mainstream, conservative bent will walk past with a slight shiver and a furrowed brow. I'm not sure if this kind of reaction does justice to its genre. Other New Weird books, like China Mieville's Perdido Street Station brought readers into this type of speculative fiction, making it better known, creating an increased audience. I appreciated the mood and place The Cipher brought me to, being a reader not easily scared away from unpleasant and alarming writing, but the novel's current near out-of-print status begs the question: if the author's portrayal of his or her unique vision drives most people away, is it truly successful?

This is a great book, it keeps your interests as I am on the 7th book of this series and find them to be very exciting. The series makes you care about the characters and you are cheering them on. Another good one from Paul Billheimer

In the first part of the book the author discusses various differences in a number of theological areas; i.e. Calvinism and Armenianism, aspects of Pentecostalism and Holiness, etc. While his review of these topics is by no means exhaustive, it certainly covers the main points adequately. In the second part of the book, he outlines a plan with biblical support for unity among Christians of all denominations based on agape love. While I won't go in to the details, it is well worth the read and I recommend in to anyone who wishes to draw closer to God

NOT YOUR TYPICAL LEADERSHIP BOOK!

This is definitely not your typical book on leadership which is why it is so good.

Starling utilizes I Corinthians to offer seven brief reflections on various themes like wisdom, motivation, and love. Though the chapters are short they are substantial. Though they are substantial they remain accessible. The only thing that baffled me was the use of the Aussie word, white-anting!

UnCorinthian Leadership is a needed corrective to the ego-driven leadership (and books) which dominate the American landscape. And it looks like they may be dominating Aussie and other landscapes as well which is kind of encouraging in a rather dark way.

Its not what I did, its what I didn't do

A refreshing, lively change of pace from the self-inflated "happy happy-joy joy" treacle of the transcendental/transformation movement! At last, a breathtakingly honest chronicler of the weird and whacky world of new age self-improvement tells the unvarnished truth about the fakirs, fartists and fools fooling around on the fringes of the scene. ... And its a rousing good read! You will lustily cheer DeRose on when she escapes from the hideous tyranny of the Vipassana meditation control freaks to go for a spin in the country on her bicycle... they couldn't take her car keys because she didn't have any! And then you'll sigh with relief when she winds up after her many adventures with her mind intact and her spirit at peace...

Debbianne DeRose shares with us one of the most entertaining memoirs of the year - her wacky but wise travels/travails of wandering through the soup of advice currently the psychology du jour trend of today. Name an avenue of seeking advice or assistance with the problems that accompany the threats of sagging skin, improbable tummy rolls, and trying to appear and think and get the responses of a 20-30 year old in the marketplace and the relationship arena and Debbianne has been there, tried that, and her experiences she shares are so hilariously funny the she is able to restore a sense of perspective where perspective has melted down with the challenged ego. If it falls into the fields of Metaphysics or Self Help, Debbianne opens the curtain hiding the Great Oz and all we can do (along with laughing out loud -oh, excuse me, 'lol') is applaud.

It has to do with change - whether that means hair color, residence, alteration of integument, or the search for the elusive `truth'. An example of her writing style follows: `I had not been treating the men in my life as equals, and I was entering each relationship trying to change them. Basically, I was looking at them as if they were projects. It's not hard to see how this would be problematic....My fundamental error lay in choosing the wrong dudes, in emanating a `come hither, Man project' vibe in the first place, which naturally attracts those who want to be `renovated' (well, at least on some level, whether they know it or not0. The ever popular Victim-Savior gag. I knew that I needed to learn greater acceptance in my relationships, but wouldn't it be brilliant to start off with someone who saw at least reasonable compatible?'

Pages after pages in this book are filled with such off the cuff conversations that indeed feel like personal conversations with the author. If only she could come over to supper and just ramble on...we might all make it through the way she has. This book is entertainment, but it is also an investment in to normalizing our scrambled brains. So much of it gets down to `laugh it off'' and get real and change. Grady Harp, July 13

Funny and Penetrating

People, there is some funny-ass s*** in this book! (I will certainly never hear the word "Vipassanna" the same.) Yet it is ultimately both penetrating and good-natured. The author takes more excursions into the lands of "woo" than any sensible person might dare, but comes through it, like Odysseus, with a helluva tale and only moderate bloodshed. I mean, a dead Cyclops or two, and routing of the false suitors... but I say too much. Read it for yourself!

Okay, I'll say a few more words. This book might invite comparisons to "Eat, Pray, Love", but it is a different kettle of wild-caught sockeye. For one, it is funny. For another, DeRose actually explores many more modalities and paths than Gilbert did, and reports back to us in a way that manages to be both healthily skeptical and generously open-minded at the same time. All in all, she gives us a stellar example of how to do the thing we call "mid-life crisis" (the overlapping questionings of meaning and personal direction that often arise beginning in our late 30's and particularly in the early to mid 40's) with intelligence, humor, and self-compassion.

Nice book, but already outdated

Nice book, but already outdated: It’s for version 3 of D3.js. Version 4 was released in June 2016. Lots of things have changed. Most of the examples don’t work with version 4.

Excellent tutorial with clear, logical explanations

I am currently working through the tutorial and the explanations show a much better understanding of CSS, JS, and D3 than I've found in other tutorials, and the explanations are much more clear from a conceptual standpoint. The quick links to the code from the Kindle book make playing with the examples much easier. I have been jumping between multiple books, and this is by far more logical and clear than any others I've tried. **I urge Amazon to make the Kindle book searchable**

A very well-written book for learning D3.js. It starts with the basics of the library explaining them in a clear way with nice examples. It is interesting that you can find descriptions of many different graphs (not only the common ones, like bar, pie and line).
The best part for me was the Webmapping section ('Creating Maps with GeoJSON and TopoJSON'). I was looking for a nice tutorial about this subject.
Overall, it is one of the best books about D3.js available.
