User-friendly, funny and powerful resource for learning the skills to effectively manage one's life
By Linda H-K
As an educational therapist and learning specialist with many clients who have executive functioning challenges, I find this book a very valuable resource. With refreshing humor and down-to-earth examples, Jan Johnston-Tyler describes the key domains of executive functioning and how to master or improve each, including managing our time, space, virtual lives, memory, projects, and information.
But as anyone knows who has tried to change a habit and failed, it's not enough to simply KNOW which tools to use. Often, the biggest challenge is getting ourselves to actually USE them! Jan proactively addresses this challenge by including unique chapters on thought management and obstacle management, including what to do when our initial plans don't go as planned.
What I liked best about this workbook is its metacognitive approach: it gets readers to actually think about our own thinking, in ways that reveal the individual strengths we can build on and the pitfalls we tend to fall into. Each chapter concludes with handy one-page Profiles to record these self-observations and personally-chosen goals and strategies. I plan to use them not only with my clients, but with myself!
In sum, if you--or a teen or adult you know--struggles with executive functioning, I highly recommend this user-friendly and thorough guide. It will help you to get done what you need to get done so you have time to actually actually live the life you want to live.

Valuable Resource for those who struggle with Executive Functioning Skills (and their support people)
By A. Meyers
Jan Johnston-Tyler is an expert in the field of Executive Functioning, for youth and adults. In Silicon Valley, she is a local treasure and champion of the needs of teens and young adults who think and learn differently. Parents, teens, and learning experts look to Jan as an invaluable resource. Whether you or someone you love may be struggling with time management, organization, or simply the frantic pace of life and multiple demands of a society infused with competing demands, this book is priceless. Filled with practical tips and tools, plus succinct explanations of how our minds work, Jan's guide teaches students of all ages ways to be successful, along with why these strategies matter. Her writing is clear, accessible, and engaging. I especially love the sections on thought patterns, procrastination, memory management, and sleep. Jan has left no stone un-turned in her comprehensive workbook. Parents, educators, and youth should buy (and practice using) this book!

Worth it for first two chapters, and for broad research
By John
The first two chapters of this book are exceedingly useful; you should study them. After that, it gets into the weeds; and not the Mexican ones, but the good, high-strength Canadian ones.
The Time Management and Space Management chapters give a great method for organizing your time and handling the mess at your desk or in your house. "Virtual Management" just extends space management to your computer; that and "Memory Management" get hokey-- http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B004QFAEJC/ (which is great) isn't the only text I've read on the subject of memory. I found the discussion of memory cringe-worthy, a mixture of simplified concepts and blatant misunderstandings. Still, I would recommend studying (with SQ3R/SQW3R, even) the time management chapter thoroughly, and the space management chapter at least briefly.
The extension chapters bother me. Thought Management is worth a read, with a hefty block of salt; you'd do better skipping the Project Management chapter and putting in a brief study of formal project management. Absolutely everyone will benefit from knowing Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), Risk Breakdown Structures (RBS), and risk assessment; a brief reading of http://smile.amazon.com/dp/193273578X/ will give you context for these things. Among all the other incredibly useful techniques in Jan's Time Management chapter, she shows hierarchical decomposition in the breakdown of large tasks into small ones, the same way project managers build a WBS by breaking down large deliverable results into smaller components, and then into tasks, which then break down into activities.
The book's worth reading just for its Time Management chapter; the Space Management chapter provides good strategies for keeping your home and workplace clean; and the Thought Management chapter has some bits of information to ponder on. The problem is much of the information attempts to be technical while being very non-technical, and so becomes distorted. The Thought Management chapter, least of all of these, suggests--correctly, but with no force--that your mindset is under your control; while it is true that the only real treatment for depression and anxiety is cognitive therapy, Jan only manages to give a motivational speech and a stream of tips-and-tricks, rather than an approachable but clinical discussion of the topic. Other chapters go even further into the weeds, giving the sense that Jan has seen things and made quick, personalized, unscientific conclusions about how the world works, and started to espouse them as gospel; the technical underpinnings are often visibly misguided or even backwards to the knowledgeable.
Four stars because it's not an absolute pile of crap, and because the material that's good is really good. Would recommend as part of broad-scope research, but absolutely not as a single source of information; if you buy this book, buy other books, study memory and mnemonics, study project management, study depression and ADHD, and reflect on it among all the other information you have. A study of English would help, too: Jan constantly starts sentences with conjunctions by putting a period where a comma or semicolon is correct.
