They Called Us Devil Dogs, by Byron Scarbrough

The final first-person battlefield account of World War I and Belleau Wood, as told by Pvt. Jim Scarbrough, 83rd Company, 3rd Battalion, Sixth Regiment United States Marine Corps, Allied Expeditionary Force. Jim's story puts you there; crossing the wheatfield at Belleau Wood, creeping across No-man's-land at Verdun, charging up Blanc Mont ridge behind the artillery. Many original historic and contemporary photos, a great text for USMC history.

Straight-forward with plenty of combat
By Joe Creason
4 stars.

James Scarbrough was a marine private in 83rd Co., 3rd Battalion, 6th Regiment during World War I. He fought in all of the major WW1 marine battles and discusses his entire experience in this short memoir. James' grandson, Byron transcribed the interviews his grandfather made talking about his time in WW1 and added some annotations here and there.

After an interesting if not life-threatening experience on the trip over the Atlantic in 1917, Scarbrough heads to France rather early in this account. He has a few funny/interesting interactions with French prostitutes, civilians and even some famous marines like Dan Daly and . He then fights in several of the major marine battles and is not coy about what he portrays in terms of his own personal deeds and those of others in his company that at times flew in the face of the rule of war. A lot of people die or get wounded around Scarbrough and the combat is delivered in a very blunt manner.

This is an account written in the epitome of "authentic voice." Scarbrough is no writer and I was worried it was gonna ruin the story for me. It didn't. The memoir reads as though it was simply a transcription from audio recordings. Very simple, easy to read. It is the style that really makes some of the combat deeds Scarborough performs and witnesses stick with you,
because after describing an action, several times the description ends with a statement along the lines of "I've never told anyone about this before"
.

If you enjoyed this then I would recommend His Time in Hell: A Texas Marine in France: The World War I Memoir of Warren R. Jackson or The World War I Memoirs of Don V. Paradis, Gunnery Sergeant, USMC, though it's not as revealing in terms of combat.

I have a listamania listing around 20 other marine WW1 accounts if you're interested.

GREAT BOOK! What a treasure & thanks to Byron ...
By G. Alvin Simons
GREAT BOOK! What a treasure & thanks to Byron Scarbrough for making these recollections available to us. As already noted, this is like sitting at Jim Scarbrough's knee listening to him speaking about his war experiences. We must never forget the sacrifices made by the men & women of every generation. It is both shocking & exhilarating in its honest recording of men at war. If you enjoy first-person history, you will certainly enjoy this book.

Good read before trip
By kelly l
I started reading this book before and then subsequently after my trip to Belleau Wood. My great grandfather fought in the battle but the family history is sparse. I appreciate the author collecting his grandfather's narrative. The first person narrative gave it more feeling and understanding of the situation and why he thinks the way he does. Thank you.
